Description
Edgar C. Blanche, often called Edgar, is a skilled senior student at the Laihiala Pilot Academy, where he is recognized as one of the top pilots. He has a straightforward and earnest personality, embodying the image of a chivalrous and orthodox knight. Prudent and principled, Edgar can be somewhat stubborn, especially regarding his duties and the equipment he uses. He is notably calm and responsible, often acting as a stabilizing presence, and he is not afraid to speak his mind, even to challenge complicated new designs.

His background is that of a talented individual whose abilities are already considered on par with those of active knights. Edgar is motivated by a strong sense of duty to protect others and uphold the values of a knight, a trait demonstrated when he bravely faced a powerful Behemoth to buy time for his juniors. He also harbors a personal desire to perform well and is concerned with the practicalities of piloting, leading him to advocate for simpler, more reliable control systems in the Silhouette Knights, though he adapts when necessary.

In the story, Edgar first appears as an upperclassman to the protagonist, Ernesti Echevarria. He pilots a white Silhouette Knight named the Earlcumber and participates in key early battles, including an encounter with a giant creature called the Land Tortoise. Following his graduation, he becomes a key member of the newly formed Silver Phoenix Knights, serving as the captain of the 1st Company. In this role, his unit often acts as a vanguard, using their shields to advance through enemy lines. He also participates in a significant mission to recover a stolen prototype, the Telestale, during which his machine is destroyed and he is seriously injured. Later in the story, he achieves the rank of Knight Commander, leading his own independent order called the White Heron Knights.

Edgar maintains several important relationships. He shares a strong professional bond with the protagonist, Ernesti, providing feedback as a test pilot for new machines and helping to keep the young genius's more extreme ideas grounded. He has a rivalrous but friendly relationship with his contemporary Dietrich Knitz, whose more aggressive fighting style contrasts with Edgar's defensive approach. Over time, he develops a close personal relationship with fellow pilot Helvi Oberi, whom he eventually marries.

Edgar is not a magical prodigy but a highly competent, practical warrior. His fighting style centers on defense and endurance, preferring to use a large shield in combat rather than focusing solely on offense. While his swordsmanship is excellent, his specialty is using his shield for protection and to control the flow of battle. He pilots the Earlcumber, a versatile white Silhouette Knight, and has been seen using an upgraded weapon called the Lightning Flail, an electrified flail that can disable enemy machines by overloading their systems. His combat skills are considerable; in the anime adaptation, he has demonstrated feats like subduing enemy knights without his mech's armor and holding his own against far more powerful opponents to create an opening for his allies. His development sees him grow from a top student into a respected leader of his own knightly order, always maintaining his core identity as a steady and principled knight.
