Description
Hiroyuki Inui is a second-year high school student at Morinomiya Academy. He is known for his tall stature and red, messy hair, typically seen wearing the school uniform with his tie worn loose. On certain occasions when he acts in secret to help the toddler Kotaro, he dons a paper bag over his head labeled Helper Mask.
Inui possesses a personality with a significant gap between self-perception and reality. He would describe himself as a pure-hearted and wonderful person worthy of respect, but his classmates view him as an idiotic, delusional, and brash jerk. He is blunt and impulsive, openly speaking his mind without filtering his thoughts, which often leads to him offending others. For instance, his initial comments about the daycare children being annoying and his crude description of the baby Midori left a bad first impression on Ryuuichi Kashima. Inui is also oblivious to how rude he appears, and when his classmates react with outrage to his personal observations, he misses the point of their anger, instead feeling that their hostility proves his opinions are correct. Though he has a romantic side and blushes easily around women he finds attractive, he has also declared that none of the girls in his class fit his type, a sentiment he shares loudly and without tact. He is prone to immersing himself in wild romantic misunderstandings and delusional scenarios.
Despite his childish behavior, Inui does show moments of maturity, such as when his respect for the sanctity of marriage drives him to try and move on from a crush after learning the woman is already happily married. He also has a hidden kind side. While his first appearance showed him finding children noisy and disgusting, repeated encounters with the daycare children lead him to discover a kinder side of himself, eventually extending this care to his interactions with his own little sister, Mika.
Inui's role in the story is primarily that of a comedic foil, often generating humor through his delusions and bad luck with romance. He becomes infatuated with Yukari, the mother of the baby Midori, mistakenly believing she is a widow and hoping to marry her. He later develops a strong crush on a mysterious gentle girl he meets at the school festival, unaware that this girl is actually Ryuuichi in a wig and female uniform. These romantic pursuits often lead to elaborate misunderstandings.
His key relationships include his interaction with Ryuuichi Kashima, whom he initially offends but later comes to rely on for help with his romantic delusions. He forms a significant bond with the toddler Kotaro, secretly watching over him at the request of the babysitter Usaida and later becoming the boy's hero in his Helper Mask disguise. His relationship with his own sister likely softens as he gains more exposure to young children.
The character shows notable development in his attitude towards children. He begins with a clear disgust but gradually discovers a kinder, more caring side of himself through his secret assistance of Kotaro and other interactions. His romantic disappointments, while played for comedy, also show his capacity to move on from infatuations, even if his judgment remains questionable.
His most notable ability is his capacity to become the Helper Mask, a secret identity that allows him to assist Kotaro while maintaining his brash public persona. This disguise is particularly effective because it hides his identity, allowing him to act selflessly. He also possesses the remarkable, if unfortunate, talent for becoming entangled in wildly inaccurate romantic misunderstandings, often to great comedic effect.
