TV-Series
Description
Hayato Kamitani is a student at Morinomiya Academy and a classmate of Ryuuichi Kashima. He is the son of the middle school science teacher, Shizuka Kamitani, and the older brother of Taka Kamitani. Hayato is a member of both the school's babysitting club, where he is the second member to join, and the baseball club, where he is considered the ace player despite his own insistence that the team is weak.
In terms of background, Hayato comes from a family that has experienced separation. His parents are divorced; his mother is Shizuka, and his father is Taizo Hebihara, a high school chemistry teacher. After the divorce, his father moved out of the household, which led Hayato to harbor a resentment towards him for not being present to help raise Taka. Despite this, Hayato shares many personality traits with his father, such as a straightforward attitude and a tendency not to speak unless necessary. His childhood was marked by his father's strict parenting style, which included lessons on discipline that Hayato now finds himself applying to his own brother.
Hayato is typically impassive and has a deadpan expression, which makes him appear stern or fierce when he does show strong emotion, particularly annoyance or anger. He is quiet and rarely displays feelings beyond boredom or frustration. His habit of hitting people on the head, especially his younger brother Taka, is noted to be a trait inherited from his mother. He is not prone to angry outbursts, instead using baseball batting as an outlet to vent his emotions. Despite his cold exterior, he cares deeply for his family and friends. This is shown when he threatens to harm someone who might hurt Ryuuichi in disguise, or when he searches for Taka after the boy runs away from home.
Hayato's primary motivation is his love for baseball, with his biggest wish being to play at the prestigious Koshien Stadium. He also seems motivated by a sense of responsibility, particularly in his role as an older brother and as a member of the babysitting club. His role in the story is primarily as a friend and peer to Ryuuichi, often providing a contrasting perspective on childcare and brotherhood. As a member of the babysitting club, he helps care for the younger children, though his methods are often more blunt and disciplinary compared to Ryuuichi's gentle approach.
His key relationships define much of his character. His relationship with his younger brother Taka is turbulent and the complete opposite of the close bond between the Kashima brothers. Hayato finds Taka loud and obnoxious, frequently hitting him on the head or threatening to do so to get him to behave. Despite this, he loves his brother deeply, though he has difficulty showing it affectionately. Taka often voices his admiration for Hayato, and Hayato has been shown to be patient with him on rare occasions. Hayato refers to his mother Shizuka with disrespect, calling her an old hag, but she is not bothered by this. Instead, she counters his bluntness by threatening to destroy his cherished baseball DVDs, which quickly gets him to comply. His relationship with his father, Taizo, is complicated due to the divorce. Hayato initially hated his father for leaving, but they maintain a typical father-son relationship. Hayato takes his father's life lessons seriously and applies them to his own interactions with Taka. He and his father get along fine, and Hebihara has shown concern for Hayato's well-being, such as offering to re-tie a bandage on his injured wrist.
Hayato's friendship with Ryuuichi Kashima begins after the two meet at the daycare center. Initially, Ryuuichi misjudges Hayato based on how harshly he disciplines Taka. However, their relationship develops after Hayato helps Ryuuichi take Kotaro to a hospital. They become friends and classmates, often debating how to handle the children in the babysitting club. A mutual respect grows between them. Hayato is often stunned by Ryuuichi's naivety, especially regarding romance, while Ryuuichi helps Hayato express his more caring side. Hayato has shown a protective and considerate side when it comes to Ryuuichi and Kotaro.
In terms of development, Hayato begins as a fairly isolated and emotionally closed-off character, but through his interactions with the babysitting club and Ryuuichi, he begins to show more of his caring nature. While he remains reserved, he becomes more involved with the group and more willing to help others. His relationship with his father also shows signs of gradual improvement over time.
Hayato has several notable abilities. He is an excellent baseball player, skilled enough to be the ace of his school's team. He is good at science subjects but performs poorly in the liberal arts. He does not have a sweet tooth, though he makes an exception for tamagoyaki, a sweetened egg omelette. His physical appearance is that of a tall, handsome boy with short black hair and narrow light green eyes, features he inherited from his mother. He is often forced to disguise himself as a girl, being referred to as Hayako, to help with various schemes.
