Description
Kirin Kumatsuka is one of the older children attending the daycare at Morinomiya Academy. She is the daughter of Yayoi Kumatsuka, the school’s drama teacher, and Satoru Kumatsuka, a freelance photographer. Kirin has a distinctive appearance with dark green hair that she usually styles into pigtails and reddish-brown eyes. She is frequently seen carrying a large stuffed giraffe, a toy that she deeply cherishes and which relates to the meaning of her name.

Kirin has a friendly and sweet personality, though she is also notably smart and eloquent for her age. Her advanced vocabulary and curiosity often mean she understands more than the adults around her expect, making it difficult for them to lie to her. Despite her intelligence, she still embodies the innocence of a child, as seen in her love for playing house and her enthusiasm for a magical girl television show called Petits Pois. She has a strong will and enjoys sharing her many ideas, often being helpful to others. When she fails at something or feels that someone dislikes something or someone she cares about, she is prone to crying with big watery eyes and red cheeks.

Within the story, Kirin acts as a prominent member of the daycare group. Her primary motivation is a deep love for her mother, whom she has declared her favorite person in the world. However, she often feels lonely because her mother's responsibilities with the drama club keep them apart. While she understands the importance of her mother's work, the separation is difficult for her, and her mother tries to compensate by arranging special activities for just the two of them. Her relationship with her father is more complicated; while he is doting and showers her with affection, he also behaves immaturely. He is overly protective and is not nice to the boys at the daycare, which causes Kirin to scold him and tell him she hates him, leading her to act like the older sister in their dynamic.

Kirin forms several key relationships with the other children. She often clashes with Taka Kamitani over differences in opinion, such as what game to play or who is a better friend to Kotaro. Their friendship appears unsteady at times, as when she tattles on him for upsetting Kotaro or when she goes to dangerous lengths to prove him wrong about the existence of witches and magic. Despite this, they always put aside their differences and come together when they agree on something. She is one of the only girls in the daycare, so she was particularly happy to become friends with Maria Inomata, who she sees as an older sister to play with. She also takes on a nurturing, older sister role herself towards the baby of the group, Midori Sawatari.

Kirin demonstrates notable abilities in her communication and literacy. She was the only child in the daycare at the beginning who could write, and she uses a relatively sophisticated vocabulary. Her strong curiosity is a defining trait, driving her actions and her attempts to prove her beliefs, such as her failed attempt to fly on a broomstick to prove that witches exist. Her development is shown through moments of maturity and resilience, as she learns to navigate her feelings of loneliness, her relationships with the boys she bickers with, and the challenges she sets for herself.
