Description
Quetzalcoatl Sassassul is a supporting character in the anime and manga A Centaur's Life. She is a foreign exchange student who comes to Japan from Antarctica and is the only female Antarctican shown in the story. Physically, she is a black and white Antarctican who resembles a snake, with blue eyes, sharp fingernails, and a gem that resembles an eye resting on her forehead, and she has no hair.
Her personality is gentle, friendly, soft-spoken, and adaptable. Because Antarcticans are depicted as having a logical way of thinking, she often feels like an alien within Japanese culture, yet she remains open to adjusting to her new surroundings. Her background also shapes certain reactions, as Antarcticans have a strong fear of swimming and deep water, since falling into the water is effectively a death sentence in their cold homeland.
In the story, her transfer into the girls' school generates considerable curiosity among her classmates, and she gradually becomes a familiar presence known by the nickname Sassas-chan. Her arrival is especially significant for Himeno Kimihara, the main character, who appears to carry childhood trauma connected to Antarcticans; Quetzalcoatl's presence brings that buried part of Himeno's past into focus and forces Himeno to confront her fears. Quetzalcoatl's motivations center on adapting to life in a foreign country, understanding the cultural differences between her logical Antarctican perspective and the customs of her new environment, and forming friendships with the people around her.
Her notable traits are mostly tied to her species rather than any special powers. Her serpentine black and white appearance, sharp fingernails, and the eye-like gem on her forehead make her stand out among her peers, and her logical mindset shapes how she perceives and interacts with the world around her. Within the narrative, she serves as a representative of an unfamiliar people whose history and roots remain largely mysterious, and her presence adds a layer of cultural exchange and personal conflict to the lives of the central characters.
