Description
Haruto Tsukishiro is the protagonist of the story, a teenage boy who finds himself trapped within a mysterious and bizarre dream world. He awakens in a strange bedroom without a clear memory of how he arrived there, quickly discovering that he is unable to return to the waking world. His situation is later revealed to be the result of a coma, as his physical body lies unconscious in reality following an accident whose details he himself cannot recall.
In terms of personality, Haruto presents as a pragmatic and generally unfazed individual. He does not display overt surprise or panic at the surreal nature of his circumstances, instead accepting the guidance offered by the dream world’s inhabitants as his only viable path forward. While he can be friendly, sociable, and polite, he also possesses a darker, more ruthless streak. He demonstrates a willingness to resort to extreme measures, including killing, without hesitation when he deems it necessary, particularly when dealing with remorseless criminals. This pragmatic heroism extends to his methods for helping the Witches he encounters; he does not follow a single moral code, sometimes offering compassionate advice to help them confront their inner pain, and at other times actively aiding them in committing acts of bloody vengeance against those who wronged them. He can be surprisingly dedicated to his personal interests, such as dressing as a girl to infiltrate an academy just to get closer to a famous idol he admires.
Haruto’s primary motivation throughout the story is to escape the dream world and return to reality. He collaborates with other key figures to achieve this goal, but his role gradually expands from a simple desire to escape into a mission to save others. He learns that the Witches he encounters are real women suffering from Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, a comatose state caused by unbearable psychological torment in their lives. To help them wake up, Haruto must enter their dreamscapes and resolve the source of their anguish. While his initial goal is self-preservation, he becomes actively invested in healing the hearts of these women, even when it complicates his own journey.
Within the dream world, Haruto has several significant relationships. His closest ally is Katsumi Kanzaki, a scientist who appears as an anthropomorphic talking cat. Kanzaki is an expert on dream world research, and the two form a partnership to investigate the nature of the Witches and find a way out. Haruto is also uniquely able to see a mysterious white-haired girl named Lily, who appears to guide him and possesses knowledge about the dream world’s true nature. Only he can perceive her for most of the story, and she plays a crucial role in his journey. Throughout his travels, Haruto meets a succession of Witches, each with her own traumatic past, and forms temporary bonds with them as he helps resolve their conflicts.
Over the course of the narrative, Haruto’s understanding of his own existence evolves. He starts as a boy simply trying to go home, but he eventually learns the truth of his comatose state and his unique significance to the dream world. The story implies that he holds a special role, likened to that of Adam, and that Lily has kept him from waking because only he can prevent a catastrophic event. His development culminates in a final, profound decision. When presented with the opportunity to finally return to the real world and awaken from his coma, he chooses instead to ascend to a higher plane of existence with Lily. He willingly accepts the end of his mortal life, resulting in the death of his physical body, as he departs for what is described as God’s domain.
Haruto possesses a few notable abilities within the dream world. Beyond his pragmatic and adaptable mindset, he has the capacity to alter his own form, demonstrated when he performs a gender-bending transformation to disguise himself as a girl for a specific mission. He is also described as having a special status as The Chosen One, being the only person who can see and interact with Lily and the one destined to confront the entity known as Eve. His primary strength, however, lies not in raw power but in his decisive and unconventional approach to problem-solving, which often cuts straight to the emotional core of the Witches’ dilemmas.
