OVA
Description
Katsura Shousaku is a young man, likely in his late teens, who first appears in the anime's original video animation, Hitori Ayumu. His most defining feature is his deep-seated and obsessive grudge against Doppo Kunikida of the Armed Detective Agency. This animosity stems from an incident that occurred two years prior to the main storyline, when Kunikida arrested Katsura for planning to detonate explosives at his own school.

Physically, Katsura has a somber appearance characterized by straight black hair that hangs down to cover his eyes. He dresses entirely in dark clothing, typically wearing a black hooded coat over a black turtleneck shirt, dark grey pants, and black gloves. This monochrome ensemble reinforces his withdrawn and shadowy demeanor.

Katsura's personality is complex and driven by an almost philosophical opposition to Kunikida's ideals. During the arrest two years ago, Kunikida told him to "live on with courage" or to "be stronger," words that Katsura found profoundly condescending and cruel. Rather than simple revenge, his goal is to systematically dismantle and disprove Kunikida's ideals, which he views as an insult to those who are weak. He vehemently believes that the powerless do not choose to be weak, and that telling them to be stronger is a form of kicking them down. This internal conflict reveals that he considers himself weak and struggles with self-acceptance, channeling his frustration into elaborate criminal schemes.

In the story, Katsura's primary role is that of an antagonist who challenges Kunikida's moral code. He appears as a bomber who initiates a deadly game to test the detective's principles. His plan involves deceiving a young girl named Aya Kouda into carrying a suitcase rigged with a bomb. When Kunikida and Aya pursue him, Katsura captures them and straps a bomb directly onto the girl. He then presents Kunikida with an impossible choice: disarm the bomb on Aya or disarm multiple bombs placed on a train track that will soon kill hundreds of passengers. Both triggers are connected to the same frequency, making it impossible to stop both detonations. Katsura's motivation is to force Kunikida into betraying his own ideal of not letting anyone die before his eyes, thereby proving that Kunikida is just as fallible and human as anyone else.

Katsura's key relationships are centered on Kunikida, but he also interacts significantly with other characters. Aya Kouda is used as an innocent pawn in his scheme to torment Kunikida. Later, during the Cannibalism arc, he is kidnapped by the antagonist Fyodor Dostoevsky, who seeks to learn about Kunikida's weaknesses. This encounter demonstrates a notable development in Katsura's character. Despite being a captive, Katsura fiercely defends Kunikida, shouting that his ideals are "the real thing" and that no one can break his spirit. This marks a significant shift from his earlier desire to destroy those same ideals, suggesting that his ordeal ultimately led him to respect the detective he once sought to ruin. By the time of his arrest, after Kunikida chooses to sacrifice himself rather than allow a child to die alone, Katsura appears shocked and ultimately smiles, possibly indicating an acceptance of the ideals he had fought against.

Katsura does not possess a supernatural ability like many characters in the series. Instead, his notable abilities are his technical expertise with explosives and his high level of intelligence and cunning. He is a meticulous planner, capable of setting up complex, almost inescapable traps that target the specific psychological vulnerabilities of his opponent. His confrontation with Kunikida is a battle of wits and ideals rather than a physical fight, relying on manipulation and ultimatums. Following his second arrest, he is taken into police custody. The character himself is a literary reference, as his name is taken from the main character of Kunikida Doppo's real-life work, "An Uncommon Common Man".
