OVA
Description
Mr. Terada, full name Yoshiyuki Terada, is a teacher at Tomoeda Elementary School. In the original Cardcaptor Sakura series, he serves as the homeroom teacher for Sakura Kinomoto and her classmates during their fourth and fifth grade years, and also teaches physical education. He is known for his calm demeanor, patience, and genuine concern for his students. He is soft-spoken, empathetic, and fosters a safe, encouraging classroom environment. In the manga, he is engaged to his student Rika Sasaki, with the intention of marrying her when she comes of age; Rika gives him a handmade teddy bear as a token of their bond. In the anime adaptation, this romantic element is downplayed, and their relationship is depicted more as a supportive teacher-student connection. In the English-dubbed Cardcaptors, all romantic implications are removed entirely.
In the original video animation Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Prologue - Sakura and the Two Bears, Mr. Terada appears as a supporting character. This OVA serves as a bridge between the original series and the Clear Card arc, showing Sakura and her friends as they prepare to enter junior high school. Mr. Terada’s role in this story is limited; he is present as part of the everyday school environment, interacting with the main characters in a familiar, low-key manner. He does not play a significant part in the magical events of the prologue, but his presence reinforces the continuity of the characters’ lives at Tomoeda Elementary before they move on to junior high.
His motivations are consistent with those of a dedicated educator: he cares about the well-being and growth of his pupils. He does not possess any magical abilities. His notable skills include teaching, cooking, and playing shogi, and he has a weakness for sewing. Throughout the series and the prologue, he does not undergo significant personal development, remaining a steady, background figure who provides a sense of normalcy and support for the younger characters. His key relationships are with his students, especially Sakura’s class, and with Rika Sasaki, whose connection to him is the most personally meaningful in his life.
