Description
Hotaru Hoshikawa is a close friend of Aoba Suzukaze and Nene Sakura, having known them since their high school years in Tokyo. She is a talented artist who served as the president of her high school's art club, a position through which she deepened her friendship with Aoba and Nene. Following graduation, Hotaru pursued her passion for illustration by enrolling in a fine arts college, and she also spent a significant period studying abroad in France.

In terms of appearance, Hotaru has short, gray-blonde hair and purple eyes, often decorated with small flower-shaped pins on the left side of her head. Her typical attire includes a yellow shirt, a blue cardigan, and navy jeans. Standing at 157 centimeters tall, she is of average height, and her birthday is July 7th.

Hotaru's personality is marked by a gentle and caring nature. She is a polite individual who does not anger easily and possesses a cheerful, slightly absent-minded disposition, often surprising those around her with unexpected comments. She has a well-documented love for puns and wordplay, frequently finding her own jokes hilarious enough to laugh at by herself. Despite her amiable and easygoing exterior, she is an immensely hard worker who is deeply dedicated to her craft and tends to push herself, sometimes to the point of overexertion. A key aspect of her character is her sensitivity to being labeled as merely talented; she becomes upset when her hard work and effort are dismissed as innate genius, as she strongly believes her achievements come from dedication and practice. She also struggles with expressing anger, often preferring to endure quietly rather than causing a fuss, though she learns to communicate her feelings more openly over time.

Her primary motivation is to become a professional illustrator at the highest level. This drive is fueled by her genuine love for art, a desire to see her own growth, and a wish to stand as a worthy rival and source of encouragement for her friend Aoba. Throughout her journey, she experiences significant professional development. While still in high school, her skills were already of a professional caliber, leading to her first job illustrating a light novel. She maintains a rigorous daily practice routine and rapidly acquires new technical skills, including 3D modeling and matte painting, when she joins the concept art team at the French game development company Blue Rose.

Her role in the story is deeply intertwined with her key relationships. She shares a close bond with Aoba Suzukaze and Nene Sakura, who affectionately call her Hotarun, while she calls them Aocchi and Nenechi respectively. Their friendship remains a cornerstone of her life, as they regularly meet up, celebrate holidays together, and support each other's careers. This friendship also evolves into a friendly rivalry, particularly with Aoba, pushing both young women to improve as artists. During her time in France, she lives with Catherine Yamato and works alongside the experienced artist Kou Yagami, with whom she develops a relationship of mutual respect, camaraderie, and creative rivalry.

Hotaru undergoes notable character development. Initially someone who finds it difficult to say no to friends and struggles with peer pressure, she learns to set boundaries and be more honest about her own limitations and feelings. Her sensitivity to being called talented forces her to confront how she wants her efforts to be perceived, shaping her professional pride. A significant moment in her arc is a professional competition with Aoba to create a key visual for a game; although she loses, she handles the disappointment with grace, congratulating her friend sincerely while acknowledging her own sadness, which demonstrates significant emotional maturity. Ultimately, she decides to leave university to work full-time at Blue Rose in France, choosing to remain Aoba's rival in the industry rather than becoming a coworker at the same company.

Her notable abilities are centered almost entirely on her artistic talent. She is a highly skilled illustrator whose work has been professionally published since her high school years. Her technical drawing skill is often noted to be superior to Aoba's, serving as a constant benchmark for her friend. Beyond traditional illustration, she has proven to be a fast learner of other visual arts skills required in game development, such as 3D modeling and digital painting, showcasing her adaptability and commitment to mastering her chosen field. She also has a physical condition that makes her prone to anemia and collapsing from fatigue or overwork, which serves as a counterpoint to her dedicated work ethic. Despite enjoying sports, she admits to being terrible at them, a trait that adds to her charm and relatability.
