Description
Jade is a gem with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, known among the Lustrous for their high durability and resilience. Often referred to by the nickname "Chairman" or "Speaker" by their peers, Jade holds a significant administrative and political role within the community, acting as a primary mediator and a key representative for Kongō-sensei. Their toughness is so well-regarded that they are sometimes called "Solid Jade". This physical resilience is mirrored in their personality; Jade is characterized by a serious, formal, and deeply disciplined nature. While the anime adaptation sometimes grants them a lighter, more playful side, the core of the character, particularly in the source material, is one of solemn duty and a strong adherence to tradition.

Jade's primary motivation is the preservation of order and the protection of their fellow Gems in accordance with Kongō-sensei's will. They view the rules and established hierarchy as essential for the survival of their fragile society against the constant threat of the Lunarians. Consequently, Jade is frequently exasperated by the reckless and disruptive behavior of the younger gem Phosphophyllite, whom they perceive as someone who often obstructs the smooth functioning of the community. This frustration, however, stems from a place of genuine concern for Phos's safety and a desire for them to find a safe role within their world, rather than simple annoyance. The pressure of maintaining order and dealing with escalating chaos among the Gems can cause Jade significant stress; they are known to occasionally lose their composure to the point of cracking or breaking parts of their own body out of frustration.

In terms of their role in the story, Jade functions as a senior figure and a cornerstone of the community on Earth. They work very closely with Euclase, who acts as their secretary and a source of emotional support. Together, this pair manages the practical aspects of daily life, such as scheduling patrols, making strategic predictions, and ensuring that other Gems adhere to their duties. Their partnership is one of mutual respect and centuries of collaboration, with Euclase's more strategic, diplomatic approach balancing Jade's firm, enforcement-oriented nature. Jade also shares a deep bond with the older Gems and is fiercely loyal to Kongō-sensei, acting as his right hand and relaying his instructions to the rest of the Lustrous.

Over the course of the narrative, Jade's character remains steadfastly loyal to their traditional values and to Kongō-sensei, even as the world undergoes dramatic changes. When a significant number of Gems choose to follow Phosphophyllite to the Moon, Jade remains on Earth, refusing to abandon their master or their post. This deep-seated loyalty and inability to understand the shifts in Phos ultimately lead to a tragic confrontation. Breaking from their preference for administrative and mediation work, Jade finds themselves forced into direct combat. Their final moments before shattering are marked not by anger, but by a poignant apology, expressing regret that they could never truly understand Phosphophyllite.

Regarding notable abilities, while not a frontline combat specialist like some of the other Gems, Jade is exceptionally durable, capable of withstanding impacts that would shatter others. Their true strength lies in their role as an organizer and mediator. Their ability to manage the community, enforce rules, and coordinate with Kongō-sensei makes them an indispensable part of the Gem society's infrastructure. On the rare occasions they do fight, their hardness allows them to be formidable. Ultimately, Jade is defined not by their combat prowess, but by their unwavering sense of responsibility and their struggle to hold a fragile world together against the relentless forces of change.
