Description
Benitoite is a supporting character in the gem community, identifiable by a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Assigned primarily to patrol duties, Benitoite cuts a figure of sensibility and earnestness, often described as someone who finds it difficult to refuse requests for assistance and gets caught up in the situations of others. This conscientious nature is coupled with a tendency toward self-consciousness, as seen when they express deep embarrassment over perceived failures during missions, feeling that they have let down their companions. Their quarters are located next to those of Cinnabar, and while Benitoite is aware of Cinnabar’s solitary predicament, they privately experience a sense of unease or fear whenever Cinnabar is nearby.

One of Benitoite’s central motivations stems from a desire to step out from the shadow of their partner, Neptunite. Benitoite privately admits to Phosphophyllite that they wish to be in a place where they are not constantly overshadowed, harboring a secret longing to visit the moon for that very reason. This internal conflict reveals a hidden layer of resentment, as Benitoite later confesses that they never liked how difficult it was to discern what Neptunite was thinking, finding their partner’s inscrutability condescending. The relationship between the two is therefore complex, marked by a professional partnership that masks Benitoite’s personal frustrations and a desire for individual recognition.

In the broader narrative, Benitoite participates in key events, most notably as one of the gems who accompanied Phosphophyllite on the pivotal journey to the moon. Their role becomes dramatically pronounced during a later confrontation where they are tasked with managing Alexandrite. When Alexandrite reawakens in a dangerous, uncontrollable state, Benitoite attempts to restrain them, dragging them off a ship in the process. In a chaotic moment, Benitoite’s grip accidentally severs Alexandrite’s head, and the force of this event results in Benitoite themselves being broken, alongside Neptunite. This moment represents a significant and tragic development, as the internal frustrations Benitoite harbored are finally vocalized only in the midst of a violent collapse.

Benitoite’s development arcs from a sensible but insecure supporting gem to a figure whose suppressed dissatisfaction leads to a dramatic breaking point. Their notable abilities are tied to their physical composition as a gem; like others, they can be shattered and are vulnerable to being taken by the Lunarians. Their specific role in managing the berserk Alexandrite also implies a level of physical competence and trust from their peers, even if that trust ultimately leads to catastrophe.
