TV-Series
Description
Amethyst refers to a pair of identical twin Gems in the series, known individually as Amethyst 84 and Amethyst 33. As a twin Gem, they possess a unique physical property in that they will not break when touching each other, a trait they once demonstrated by playfully bashing their heads together to the alarm of another Gem. Both have short purple hair that covers one eye, with 84 typically covering the left eye and 33 covering the right, a feature they would later use to impersonate one another. Their apparent age is that of a teenager.
In terms of personality, the Amethyst twins work in perfect tandem, often speaking at the same time or finishing each other's sentences, which gives them a seamless and unified presence. When together, they can become carefree, cocky, and overconfident in their abilities, but they are also deeply kind and tend to put the well-being of others before themselves. This was notably displayed when they reassured a guilt-ridden Phosphophyllite after the twins were shattered in battle, taking full responsibility for their own carelessness rather than blaming the younger Gem who had been frozen with fear. Despite their synchronized existence, each twin secretly harbors a desire for more independence. This stems from a shared fear that if the Lunarians were to attack, their inseparable nature means they would both be captured at the same time, leaving no chance for one to be saved.
The twins were first formally introduced when their teacher assigned Phosphophyllite to join them on patrol duty to gain combat experience. During this time, they teased Phos with false alarms and their playful attitude, while also training them in swordplay due to their considerable talent as warriors. Their role in the story becomes more significant later when the subject of traveling to the Moon arises. After Phosphophyllite returned from the Moon and spoke of their experiences, Amethyst 33 confessed a desire to become independent from their twin. Unbeknownst to them, Amethyst 84 was listening and, out of care for 33, decided to go to the Moon in their place, impersonating them by switching which eye their hair covered.
This decision marks a major turning point in their development. On the Moon, Amethyst 84 gradually becomes more of an individual, adjusting well to life alongside the Lunarians. They become an assistant scientist under the Lunarian researcher Barbata, developing a strong interest in the psychological aspects of science and noting that the Gems who remained on Earth had never received proper treatment for their accumulated trauma. Amethyst 84 changes their appearance and clothing style to reflect their new outlook and even expresses interest in becoming a Lunarian, as being a Gem limits the scientific fields they can study. Eventually, they succeed in building a device capable of transforming Gems into Lunarians. Amethyst 84 shows considerable courage later on, standing up to Phosphophyllite when Phos attempts to blackmail them into joining an invasion of the Earth. While 84 undergoes this significant transformation, Amethyst 33 remains on Earth, learning to cope with their twin's absence over the centuries.
Key relationships define their journey. Their bond with each other is the most central, characterized by deep care, reliance, and an underlying fear of their own interdependence. Their relationship with Phosphophyllite evolves from teasing mentors to impressed admirers when Phos gained new strength, and eventually to a state of lost respect as Phos's actions became more extreme. On the Moon, Amethyst 84 develops a respectful mentor-student relationship with Barbata, who supports their scientific pursuits and expresses concern for their safety.
In terms of notable abilities, both Amethyst twins are highly talented swordsfighters, skilled enough to be recommended as instructors for other Gems. Their coordination in battle is exceptional due to their twin nature, allowing them to fight in perfect unison. They also demonstrate considerable resilience, as they were successfully reassembled and repaired by Rutile after being shattered by a Lunarian trap made of Sapphire. Later in the story, Amethyst 84 proves to have a sharp scientific mind, mastering complex Lunarian technology and inventing the device that transforms Gems into Lunarians.
