Description
Benedict Blue is a young man who works as a postman for the CH Postal Company, where he is also one of its founding members. He has a slim build, short, spiky sandy-blond hair with longer forelocks that frame his face, and bright, sky-blue eyes that are a notable feature. His sense of fashion is distinctive; unlike his colleagues who wear uniforms, he prefers a flashy outfit consisting of a loose shirt held by suspenders over tight leather pants, completed by tall boots with distinctive heels. The color of his shirt varies between depictions, appearing as white in the anime and spring green or yellow-green in the original novels.
Benedict’s past before joining the postal service is marked by a life of combat and hardship. He originally came from a continent different from the story's main setting of Leiden. He was once a gladiator and later worked as a mercenary, earning him a reputation as a formidable fighter. His history is one of trauma and lost identity; he was an experimental subject for an organization that forced him to consume memory-erasing drugs, leaving him with almost no recollection of his early life. The only memory that remained was the knowledge that he had a younger sister. Prior to becoming a mercenary, he was taken in by a group of Romani people, from whom he learned to sing and dance while traveling with them. His life as a mercenary ended badly when he fell into a trap and was left for dead, robbed and naked in the middle of a desert. He was rescued in this dire state by Claudia Hodgins, who not only saved his life but also gave him his current name, Benedict Blue. The name Benedict was chosen for its meaning as a patron saint of travelers, while his surname, Blue, was a nickname from his mercenary days that referenced his striking eye color.
In terms of personality, Benedict presents a rough and often contradictory exterior. He is known for being blunt, disrespectful, and stubborn, frequently speaking to his superiors, including his friend and boss Claudia Hodgins, in a very casual and rude manner. He is a man who says what he thinks and can come across as uncouth and uninterested in formalities. This attitude, combined with a perceived insensitivity to women's feelings, has earned him a somewhat poor reputation among the female employees of the CH Postal Company. However, this brash exterior hides a fundamentally kind, gentle, and protective heart. He is deeply responsible, a hard worker, and possesses strong leadership skills that make him a reliable figure among his fellow postmen. He also shows a surprisingly innocent and youthful side, becoming flustered and blushing easily in awkward or intimate situations, such as when Violet Evergarden naively begins to undress in front of him or when he witnesses Cattleya Baudelaire acting affectionately toward Hodgins. This trait creates a notable contrast with his past as a mercenary.
Benedict’s primary role in the story is as a postman for the CH Postal Company, a job he performs with dedication. He serves as an initial mentor and senior colleague to Violet Evergarden when she first joins the company, teaching her the ropes of postal delivery. In the anime, this relationship is one of a senior guiding a newcomer, while in the original novels, they are depicted as colleagues who founded the company together from the start. Regardless of the adaptation, he comes to care for her deeply, acting as a protective older brother figure and supporting her through her emotional struggles. He affectionately calls her Vi. In the source material, there are even subtle suggestions that he and Violet might be the long-lost siblings they are both searching for.
His key relationships extend to his fellow founders. He shares a long and strong bond of camaraderie with Claudia Hodgins, whom he trusts implicitly and often annoys on purpose, with Hodgins accepting his brusque manner with a resigned familiarity. Similarly, he has a famously combative relationship with Cattleya Baudelaire; they are constantly arguing and bickering, a dynamic so routine that their coworkers have grown used to it and simply ignore it. Despite the constant fighting, it is well known within the company that they are secretly a couple and are in a romantic relationship. Later in the story, he also becomes a mentor to a young girl named Taylor Bartlett, who runs away from an orphanage to work at the postal company. He patiently teaches her how to read, write, and perform the duties of a postman, and she comes to affectionately call him master.
Benedict’s most notable ability is his exceptional combat prowess, a direct result of his past as a gladiator and mercenary. He is highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat and is also a skilled marksman with firearms. His physical strength, speed, and agility are of a very high order, allowing him to protect his colleagues and perform feats of bravery. In the climax of the story, his combat skills become crucial for saving Violet Evergarden from a life-threatening situation. Throughout the series, Benedict's journey is one of finding a new purpose and family after a violent and lost past, ultimately discovering a sense of belonging within the CH Postal Company, where he eventually becomes the head of a branch office.
