Description
Gauche Adlai is a Magic Knight of the Clover Kingdom’s Black Bull squad, known for his aloof demeanor and his extreme devotion to his younger sister, Marie. He hails from the Adlai noble family, but his life changed drastically following the sudden death of his parents in an accident. After their passing, a relative seized the family inheritance, leaving Gauche and his sister penniless and homeless. Forced to survive on the streets, Gauche resorted to theft and other crimes to provide for Marie, which eventually led to his imprisonment. He later escaped from prison with the sole intention of reuniting with his sister but was intercepted by Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls. After being defeated by Yami, Gauche was recruited into the squad, understanding that this position would allow him to protect Marie while serving the kingdom.

Gauche’s personality is overwhelmingly defined by his love for his sister, to the point of being labeled a siscon. He views Marie as an angel or a goddess and frequently boasts about her to others, often showing her picture to anyone nearby. The mere thought of Marie can cause him to have severe nosebleeds, a trait that many other characters find unsettling or repulsive. Outside of his obsession with his sister, Gauche is generally cold, antisocial, and ill-mannered. He carries deep-seated distrust for humanity as a whole, a consequence of being betrayed by his relatives as a child, and firmly believes that he only needs Marie to be happy. He typically ignores those around him, responds with impatience, and has little concern for the well-being of strangers. However, despite his harsh exterior, he is highly intelligent and demonstrates exceptional strategic thinking during combat.

Gauche’s primary motivation throughout the story is the security and happiness of his younger sister, Marie. She is entrusted to a church in the village of Nean, where Sister Theresa looks after her. Due to his obsessive behavior, Gauche is only permitted to visit Marie once a month, a restriction he deeply resents. He often rushes through missions to return to her side and has been known to sneak out in disguise to see her. When he is away, he maintains contact with her using a small mirror-shaped magical tool, which he has placed on her person for communication. Every action he takes, from joining the Magic Knights to taking on dangerous quests, is ultimately done to ensure Marie has a better life.

Within the story, Gauche serves as a member of the Black Bulls, a squad known for its eccentric and misfit members. He is a capable and experienced combatant whom his comrades can rely on in battle, even if they find his personality grating. His role is frequently that of a powerful attacker or a strategic support mage. He tends to prefer fighting alone, convinced that others are unreliable, but will cooperate when the situation demands it. While he neglects his teammates in daily life, he becomes fiercely protective when a threat involves his sister. For instance, when Marie was kidnapped by the Eye of the Midnight Sun, Gauche partnered with Asta to rescue her, demonstrating his willingness to set aside his selfishness to achieve his goals.

Gauche’s key relationships initially revolve solely around Marie. His bond with Sister Theresa is strained, as she disapproves of his unhealthy fixation and criminal past. His relationship with his fellow squad members, particularly Asta, undergoes significant development. Gauche is initially hostile and jealous toward Asta because Marie has developed a childish crush on the young magic knight. He frequently threatens and attacks Asta under the pretense of protecting his sister’s honor. Despite this, Gauche gradually grows to respect and cooperate with Asta during joint battles. The influence of the Black Bulls, with their rough but familial camaraderie, slowly chips away at his misanthropic worldview. He even forms a unique partnership with Grey, a shy member of the squad whom he once unknowingly saved in the past, and they later coordinate their magic effectively in combat.

Gauche’s character development is marked by a gradual, albeit reluctant, expansion of his circle of concern. Initially, he is utterly selfish, willing to abandon allies if it means securing his and Marie’s safety. However, after joining the Black Bulls and fighting alongside them, his cynical worldview begins to shift. He learns to trust his companions and accept their help, culminating in moments where he uses his power to protect not just Marie, but the entire squad. During the Elf Reincarnation arc, Gauche is possessed by the soul of an elf named Droit. After being freed from the possession, he awkwardly expresses gratitude to his comrades for saving him, admitting, in his own way, that he values them despite having previously claimed he did not.

Gauche wields Mirror Magic, a versatile ability that allows him to create, manipulate, and reflect through reflective surfaces. He also possesses a considerable amount of magical power, a remnant of his noble lineage. His most notable piece of equipment is a magical tool embedded in his left eye socket, which serves as a mirror that can store vast amounts of mana for later use, essentially acting as a secondary battery to amplify his spells. His grimoire contains various Mirror Magic spells. One of his primary offensive techniques is Reflect Light, where he fires high-energy beams from a mirror. He can bounce these beams between multiple surfaces in a technique called Repeated Reflect, creating a net of light to overwhelm enemies. In defense, he can deploy panels to perform Full Reflect, sending an opponent's attack back at them with equal force. He can also use Real Double, a spell that summons a clone of himself from within a mirror to fight alongside him, sharing his consciousness and tactical mind. A more advanced spell called Multiple Mirror Brigade involves creating countless duplicates of a target, which is effective for confusion and coordinated attacks. Later in the series, Gauche learns to combine his magic with other elements, such as using composite magic with Grey to counter powerful enemy abilities.
