Description
Augustus Kira Clover XIII is the reigning monarch of the Clover Kingdom. A 35-year-old man, he has a distinct physical appearance characterized by short, golden-brown hair, a well-groomed handlebar mustache that curls at the ends, and a small, pointed goatee. He stands at a height of 160 centimeters and has an October 22nd birthday. His typical royal attire includes a striped doublet of dark and light purple, a fur-lined green mantle, and a yellow cravat.

His personality is defined by profound laziness and an extreme self-centered nature. He holds an unwavering belief that he is inherently worthy of praise and adoration, a desire that makes him deeply envious of anyone else who receives public admiration. This is most evident in his constant jealousy toward the Wizard King, Julius Novachrono, whose popularity with the common people far exceeds his own. Augustus considers royal blood to be superior and does not respect commoners, believing that titles and background define a person's worth. This puts him in direct contrast to Julius, who believes merit earns respect. This conceit makes his state of mind fragile; he cannot tolerate even slight insults and once ordered the executions of Asta and Yuno for making blunt comments about his lack of achievements. Despite his desire to be loved, he rarely leaves his palace to interact with his subjects, leading many citizens to see him as a mere figurehead and to respect the Wizard King as the true authority.

In the story, Augustus serves as a foil to the Wizard King, representing the failings of an entitled and out-of-touch nobility. His primary motivation is to steal credit from Julius and reclaim the people's support. During the Star Awards Festival, he announced the formation of the Royal Knights, a special squad created to take the fight to the Eye of the Midnight Sun, taking credit for the Wizard King's behind-the-scenes work. His role becomes more prominent during the elf reincarnation arc. When the elf-possessed Langris Vaude carves a path to the throne room, the Magic Knights are absent, forcing Augustus to act. He attempts to use his magic, the Absolute Monarch of Divine Brilliance, to intimidate the elf, but the spell is effortlessly carved through, destroying part of his crown and throne and leaving the king in utter shock. He is later saved not by his own power but by the intervention of Finral Roulacase, Yami Sukehiro, and Jack the Ripper, and subsequently by the accidental efforts of Sekke Bronzazza. Following the elf attack, he attends the Magic Parliament trial of Asta, reflecting his persistent distrust of those he deems a threat.

Key relationships highlight his political and personal failures. He is openly jealous of Julius Novachrono and dislikes how the Wizard King's authority overshadows his own. He has a transactional relationship with Sekke Bronzazza, praising him as a hero after mistakenly believing Sekke saved his life, and later keeping him as a servant. His relationship with the Magic Knights is largely antagonistic; he resents their independence and popularity, particularly the success of squads like the Golden Dawn that are not filled with royals. He also has a grandniece named Finesse Calmreich, whose betrothal to Langris Vaude he attempted to end following the elf incident.

Augustus shows very little meaningful character development throughout the series. He remains consistently arrogant, weak-willed, and ignorant of his own shortcomings. Even after the elf attack, where his magical ineptitude was laid bare, he continues to attempt to assert his authority and claim credit, as seen when he tries to give a speech to the people of the kingdom, only to have his display ruined by bickering Magic Knight captains. His understanding of his own abilities remains negligible, as he fails to grasp the tactical uses of his magic, preferring to use it for ostentatious displays.

Regarding his abilities, Augustus possesses an immense amount of mana, a trait common among royals of the Clover Kingdom. He wields a three-leaf clover grimoire that grants him Light Magic. However, despite this raw power and the inherent speed associated with light-based spells, his skill and understanding of his own magic are severely lacking. His signature spell, Absolute Monarch of Divine Brilliance, creates a gigantic, glowing construct of himself intended to intimidate. In practice, this spell is considered very slow and has been easily destroyed by opponents, demonstrating that his arrogance prevents him from effectively using his power. He is often confused by magical tactics and requires explanations from others, highlighting his ignorance.
