Description
Dante Zogratis is the eldest of the Zogratis siblings and serves as the leader of the Dark Triad, the ruling force of the Spade Kingdom. His past is rooted in military service as a soldier for the Spade Kingdom, a life that left him profoundly bored and dissatisfied as nothing he did, including killing and achieving victories, could satisfy his internal craving for malice. This ennui drove him to lead a rebellion against the ruling Grinberryall royal family alongside his younger siblings, Zenon and Vanica. The coup resulted in the near-total extermination of the royal house, seizing control of the kingdom and establishing a tyrannical rule built upon a pact with devils from the underworld.
Dante’s personality is defined by a calm, manipulative, and profoundly twisted nature. He rarely loses his composure and operates with a calculating mind, believing with absolute conviction that evil is the true nature of humanity. He views emotions such as rage, fear, hatred, and revenge as the supreme expressions of being human, and considers the world too dull because it does not constantly reflect this malice. Being called evil is, to him, a compliment, and he takes delight in witnessing others succumb to their darkest impulses. This sadistic psychopathy is paired with a notable misogyny, as he objectifies women he finds useful or beautiful, bluntly declaring mages like Vanessa Enoteca and Grey to be his brides while becoming enraged if they use their powers for anyone other than himself. He also admires strength and becomes excited when facing formidable opponents such as Asta and Yami Sukehiro.
Dante’s primary motivation is to plunge the world into chaos and malice by unleashing the devils of the underworld. To achieve this, he orchestrates the creation of the Tree of Qliphoth, a magical channel that requires the unique magical attributes of two specific individuals: Yami Sukehiro with his Dark Magic and William Vangeance with his World Tree Magic. By sacrificing these two as the keys connecting the living world to the underworld, Dante plans to open the gates and allow a flood of devils to pour out, creating a world overflowing with the evil he cherishes.
In the story, Dante acts as a major antagonist during the second saga, personally leading the effort to capture Yami Sukehiro. He attacks the Black Bulls’ hideout, overwhelming several members and forcing Asta to tap further into his devil powers. He engages in a prolonged and brutal battle with Captain Yami Sukehiro, demonstrating immense power and revealing his plans for the Tree of Qliphoth. After being critically wounded by a combined attack from Yami and Asta, he is rescued by his brother Zenon. His defeat removes him as an active combatant for a period, though his actions directly advance the Spade Kingdom's ultimate goal of the devil invasion, which continues to have major repercussions for the other kingdoms.
Regarding key relationships, Dante is the eldest and leader of the Dark Triad, with his siblings Zenon and Vanica as his primary allies in ruling the Spade Kingdom. He serves as the host for Lucifero, one of the highest-ranking devils (a Qliphoth devil), who grants him a vast increase in power. He views the Black Bulls' captain Yami Sukehiro as a vital tool and an intriguing opponent. His fight with Asta leads him to recognize the boy as an unusual devil host, and he takes a perverse interest in trying to awaken Asta’s inner malice. Beyond his immediate circle, he uses the scientist Morris to further enhance his abilities after his initial defeat.
Dante’s development sees him start as a supremely confident and seemingly unstoppable force, only to face a significant defeat. This loss does not lead to redemption; instead, he becomes even more monstrous after being modified by Morris, gaining enhanced regenerative capabilities that make him even harder to destroy. In subsequent battles, he continues to rely on his overwhelming power and immortality, though his arrogance eventually becomes a tactical vulnerability when opponents find ways to circumvent his advantages. His arc solidifies his role as an agent of pure chaos who refuses to change his worldview even when confronted with his own mortality.
Dante possesses notable abilities derived from his devil possession and his own innate magic. As a devil host, he can draw upon Lucifero's power up to 80% of its full strength (and can reach 100% when the gates of the underworld open), with each increase transforming his appearance into a more demonic form. His primary combat magic is Gravity Magic, granted by Lucifero. This allows him to levitate himself and immense objects, immobilize targets with crushing pressure, distort space to evade attacks, and compress rocks into swords for combat. At higher percentages, his gravity magic can nullify other spells entirely. His innate magic is Body Magic, which he generally dislikes using due to its unsightly appearance, but it provides him with a phenomenal level of regeneration. He can heal from devastating wounds almost instantly, and this ability, especially after enhancement, makes him effectively immortal, as he can manipulate his own flesh to repair damage, grow new limbs, and even stop his natural aging. This combination of overwhelming gravity manipulation and near-instantaneous self-healing makes him an extraordinarily difficult opponent to kill.
