Description
Patry, also known by his true elf name Patolli, is a central character in the anime Black Clover who serves as the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, a group that opposes the Clover Kingdom. He is an elf who lived five hundred years before the events of the story. On the day before his grimoire ceremony, the elves were betrayed and massacred by humans, though this tragedy was secretly orchestrated by the devil Zagred, who manipulated both sides into destroying each other. After the massacre, Patry's soul was reincarnated into the body of William Vangeance, the captain of the Golden Dawn squad, a human whose appearance closely resembled Licht, the former leader of the elves. Because he could not use William's existing grimoire, Patry obtained his own four-leaf clover grimoire.
Physically, Patry resembles Licht, appearing as a tall, slender elf with white hair, golden eyes, and red crescent tattoos near his eyes, with red dots above them in place of eyebrows. His personality undergoes a significant transformation over the course of the story. Originally, he was a gentle and devoted follower of Licht, but after witnessing the destruction of his people, he became consumed by grief, hatred, and a desire for vengeance. Adopting Licht's name and appearance, he founded the Eye of the Midnight Sun and dedicated himself to reincarnating his fellow elves and punishing humanity. He was also highly critical of the Clover Kingdom's inequality between nobles and commoners, and he intended to correct these injustices through force, even though his methods mirrored the cruelty he condemned. Later, after learning the truth about Zagred's manipulation, Patry becomes remorseful, and his personality shifts to a kinder and more selfless one, to the point that he is willing to sacrifice himself to save the kingdom he had endangered.
Patry's motivations are rooted in avenging his fallen people, reuniting with the other elves, and resurrecting Licht, the leader he deeply admired. These goals drive him to act as the primary antagonist of the story's early saga. He orchestrates the elf reincarnation invasion, during which elf souls take over the bodies of compatible humans across the Clover Kingdom, turning the kingdom's protectors into its greatest threat. He also plays a direct role in the defeat of Wizard King Julius Novachrono, striking him during a confrontation after William Vangeance surrendered control of their shared body.
His key relationships are central to his character. With William Vangeance, he shares a body, and over time the two develop a bond similar to that of twin brothers, with William supporting Patry's goals despite the human suffering they would cause. Patry also holds deep reverence for Licht, whose identity he assumed while plotting revenge, and he works alongside other reincarnated elves such as Fana, Vetto, and Rhya. His relationship with Asta is also significant, as Asta's anti-magic ultimately allows Patry to be exorcised. The devil Zagred is the one who chose Patry as his pawn, using a forbidden reincarnation spell to set his plans in motion.
In terms of development, Patry's journey moves from vengeful antagonist to remorseful figure. When he realizes that Zagred was the true enemy behind the elven massacre, he clears his doubts about humans and accepts the bond between Licht and the human Lemiel. He even allows Asta to exorcise him so that William and Licht can combine their magic to exorcise all the remaining elves and end the invasion. Afterward, he is resurrected in Licht's artificial body and continues to play a supporting role in later events.
Notably, Patry wields Light Magic, a rare and extremely fast magic attribute that gives him tremendous speed and destructive capability in battle. He possesses his own four-leaf clover grimoire, which marks him as a mage of exceptional potential. Combined with his strategic leadership and combat skill, his abilities make him one of the most formidable opponents the Clover Kingdom faces during the elf reincarnation arc.
