Description
Gauche Adla is a Magic Knight of the Clover Kingdom who belongs to the Black Bull squad, known for his exceptional yet unconventional personality and abilities. Standing at 181 centimeters tall with shaggy light brown hair that often drapes over his left eye, Gauche was born as the first son of the noble House Adlai. His left eye is not natural but a prosthetic magical mirror tool that stores mana, a distinguishing physical feature that is central to his combat style.

Gauche's background is defined by tragedy and betrayal. Following the sudden death of his parents in an accident when he was young, he and his infant sister Marie were stripped of their inheritance and cast out of their home by relatives who seized the family fortune. Forced to survive on the streets, Gauche resorted to stealing and other crimes to provide for his sister, eventually being captured and imprisoned. After escaping, he was confronted and defeated by Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls. Rather than return him to captivity, Yami offered Gauche a position as a Magic Knight, an offer Gauche accepted as a way to legally earn money for his sister's welfare.

The driving force behind nearly everything Gauche does is his obsessive devotion to his younger sister Marie, whom he calls an angel or a goddess. He keeps her photograph with him at all times and speaks of her constantly, often becoming so overwhelmed by his emotions that his nose begins to bleed. Gauche views Marie as the only pure and meaningful person in his life, a belief rooted in the betrayal he suffered from his own extended family. As a result, he is deeply distrustful of most other people and adopts a cold, brash, and ill-mannered demeanor toward anyone who is not his sister. He has little patience for others and does not hesitate to threaten or attack anyone he perceives as a threat to his relationship with Marie, a hostility he frequently directs at his squadmate Asta after Marie expresses fondness for the young Magic Knight.

Within the story of the Black Bulls, Gauche initially functions as a solitary figure who only accepts missions to earn money for Marie and shows no interest in camaraderie. He is, however, noted to be the most intelligent member of the squad, a fact that informs his strategic approach to combat. His role begins to shift through his interactions with Asta. During a mission to rescue a group of kidnapped children including Marie, Gauche abandons the other captives to flee with his sister, but Marie rebukes him and reminds him that she prefers the person he becomes when he protects others as a Magic Knight. This moment prompts Gauche to return to the battle and, for the first time, use his magic to assist someone other than himself. He combines his powers with Asta's, allowing the young swordsman to unleash a devastating attack on their enemies. This event marks the beginning of Gauche's gradual, grudging development as a team player.

Gauche's most significant relationships outside his sister include his rivalry-turned-friendship with Asta, his respect for Captain Yami who gave him a second chance, and a subtle bond with his fellow Black Bull Grey. During the elf reincarnation arc, Gauche becomes possessed by the soul of an elf named Drowa, forcing his comrades to fight him. After being freed from the possession, Gauche expresses belief that he has no value to his companions because he cares only for himself and Marie, but his actions suggest he has come to appreciate them in his own awkward way. A later development hints at a potential romantic interest in Grey, showing that Gauche's capacity for emotional connection may be expanding beyond his singular fixation on his sister.

Gauche wields Mirror Magic, a unique form of magic that allows him to generate, manipulate, and attack through reflective surfaces. His spells include Reflect Ray, which fires beams of light from mirrors, and Real Mirror, which creates physical copies of himself or other people that can fight independently. The artificial mirror in his left eye amplifies his magical power, enabling him to cast more potent spells such as Complete Reflect, which can rebound even extremely powerful attacks. During the battle against the leader of the White Night Eye, Gauche famously used his mirror to fully reflect Licht's Light Shaft of Divine Punishment, a spell of immense destructive force, back at its caster. Mirror Magic has a natural advantage over Light Magic, as light-based attacks can be redirected rather than absorbed or blocked. Gauche can also perform Union Magic by combining his Mirror Magic with Grey's Transformation Magic, creating a synergistic effect that enhances both their abilities.

Over the course of the series, Gauche evolves from a selfish, isolated criminal concerned only with his own survival and his sister's happiness into a capable Magic Knight who, despite his abrasive personality, learns to trust and protect the people around him. His journey is one of slowly opening a heart closed off by early betrayal, finding that protecting what he loves does not have to mean forsaking everyone else.
