Description
Henry Legolant is a member of the Black Bull squad of the Clover Kingdom, where he serves as a 5th Class Junior Magic Knight and is originally of noble birth. His most defining characteristic is a rare and serious condition, described as a curse or illness, that forces him to constantly and passively absorb the mana of those around him to sustain his own life. Because of this, he lived as a recluse for many years. He was left alone in a secluded family home after his parents disappeared, and was near death when the captain of the Black Bulls, Yami Sukehiro, discovered him. Yami not only recruited Henry but also decided to use Henry's house as the squad's official hideout, ensuring Henry would always be surrounded by people whose mana could sustain him.
Physically, Henry is a tall and pale young man, standing 190cm tall. He has long, untidy white or light blue hair that often serves as a home for several small birds. His isolated past has influenced his personality, making him incredibly gentle, compassionate, and deeply grateful to his comrades in the Black Bulls. He values his found family above all else and is fully prepared to sacrifice his own life to protect them. A notable quirk is that he speaks extremely slowly, drawing out his words, which can be a source of frustration for more impatient teammates like Gauche Adlai.
For most of the story, Henry is the mysterious ghost of the Black Bull base. While other members noticed that the building's layout seemed to change on its own, they did not know of Henry's existence. He spent his time watching the other members from his room, considering them all his friends even though they were unaware of him. His closest friend is Asta, the squad member who has no mana. Because Asta possesses no magic power, Henry can spend time with him without any risk of draining his energy, and the two became close confidants before Henry was formally introduced to the rest of the squad.
Henry makes his dramatic debut when the rogue mage Rades Spirito attacks the Black Bull hideout. Seeing his comrades in danger, he reveals himself and demonstrates his unique combat style. He uses Recombination Magic, an attribute that allows him to freely rearrange the shape, location, and structure of his house, effectively turning the entire hideout into a giant, weaponized golem. By using the vast amount of mana he has passively absorbed from his squadmates over time, Henry can transform the base into a massive, moving bull to deliver powerful physical attacks, launch his teammates from cannons to amplify their spells, and create smaller mobile versions for more precise combat.
His role in the story expands significantly during the elf reincarnation arc. He uses his abilities to transport his squad to the Royal Capital to help save the kingdom. In a desperate battle against the elves Drowa and Eclat, he demonstrates his profound loyalty. Intending to create an opening for Asta, Grey, and Gordon, Henry ejects them from his mobile base and dives at the enemy, deliberately letting his base be destroyed and relying solely on his mana-draining constitution to absorb the elves' magic, even at the cost of his own life. His willingness to sacrifice himself, followed by his rescued teammates refusing to let him die, highlights his deep bond with the Black Bulls.
Henry's development continues in later story arcs. His mana absorption, once a curse he could not control, is eventually refined. With the help of his teammate Gordon Agrippa, who studies curses and poisons, Henry learns to manage his condition more effectively and even target specific enemies to drain their magical power. This proves crucial during the final battle against the devil Lucifero and in the Spade Kingdom raid, where he is able to absorb a massive amount of magic to empower his hideout and withstand attacks from overwhelmingly powerful foes. Throughout the series, Henry evolves from a tragic, isolated figure into a powerful and integral member of the Black Bulls, whose unique abilities and unbreakable loyalty are vital to his squad's success.
