Description
Julius Novachrono serves as the twenty-eighth Magic Emperor, or Wizard King, of the Clover Kingdom's Magic Knights, a position that places him at the absolute pinnacle of all magic users within the realm. Born in the noble realm, he is a tall man standing at 180 centimeters in height, aged forty-two with AB blood type, and possesses a unique, coverless grimoire with pages that spin freely around its axis. Perhaps his most distinguishing physical feature is a star-shaped mark on his forehead, which is not a tattoo or birthmark but an ancient magical tool known as Swallowtail that he discovered, designed by a mage from a bygone era to accumulate and store magical power and time.

Julius is characterized by an easygoing, cheerful, and strikingly approachable demeanor that defies the typical expectations of someone with his supreme authority. He is, above all else, a genuine magic fanatic who exhibits an almost childlike wonder and excitement whenever he encounters new, rare, or unusual magic, often becoming completely absorbed in studying it on the spot. This obsession frequently leads him to neglect his administrative duties, much to the distress of his personal aide, Marx Francois. To satisfy his curiosity and observe the kingdom's people firsthand, Julius frequently uses transformation magic to disguise himself as an old woman or other ordinary citizens to wander the capital incognito, an activity he calls "transformation strolls". Despite this playful and whimsical exterior, he possesses immense wisdom, a profoundly realistic understanding of the world, and a core of unwavering steel when the situation demands it, as he is entirely capable of ruthlessly killing enemies who threaten his citizens.

Julius’s core motivation and entire philosophy as a leader are rooted in the belief that human potential is limitless and should never be constrained by accident of birth. He was profoundly inspired by Zara Ideale, the first peasant to become a Magic Knight, who fought selflessly for the people despite facing prejudice from his own noble comrades. Zara’s subsequent death at the hands of jealous nobles solidified Julius's resolve to shatter the rigid class barriers that plagued the Clover Kingdom. Determined to turn his ideals into reality, Julius accumulated overwhelming achievements and rose through the ranks on his own merit, eventually claiming the title of Magic Emperor specifically so he could wield the power necessary to reform the system from within. Once in power, he enacted sweeping changes, most notably instituting a star-based merit system that evaluates Magic Knights on their tangible contributions and accomplishments rather than their lineage. He boldly appointed commoners like Jack the Ripper and foreigners like Yami Sukehiro to the prestigious positions of Magic Knight captains, directly challenging the noble establishment and gradually steering the kingdom toward a more equitable future. His ultimate dream is to create a world without discrimination, where every individual is judged fairly by their actions and their dedication to protecting others.

His role in the story is initially as the ultimate paragon and the wise, if eccentric, mentor figure who oversees all the Magic Knights. Before becoming Magic Emperor, he was the captain of the Grey Deer squad, where he demonstrated an exceptional eye for talent, personally recruiting and mentoring key figures such as Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance. His relationship with Yami is particularly significant, as he was the first person in the kingdom to accept the foreigner and recognize the incredible potential of his dark magic, forging a deep bond of respect and loyalty. Similarly, he gave William purpose and a symbolic mask to hide his disfigurement, a debt that would later have tragic consequences. He serves as a pillar of support and a source of profound advice for the young protagonists, Asta and Yuno, teaching them that becoming the Wizard King requires not just power, but "overwhelming achievements" earned through protecting the kingdom.

Julius wields immensely powerful Time Magic, considered one of the rarest and most formidable magical attributes in existence, drawing comparisons even to the highest-ranking devils. His abilities are vast and versatile, including Chronostasis to completely stop an opponent's time, effectively freezing them in place. He can accelerate time to rapidly age and decay anything, instantly disintegrating an enemy. By using Mana Zone in conjunction with his magic, he can accelerate the time of the surrounding mana to briefly perceive and predict future attacks, a form of combat foresight. Most remarkably, he can reverse time, allowing him to rewind his own wounds and restore his stamina. In a desperate act to save the entire kingdom from an attack by the elf Patri, he reversed time on a national scale, an act that saved countless lives but cost him his own life force. The mark on his forehead, Swallowtail, had been slowly storing time for years, and upon his death, it activated, sacrificing his stored age and returning him to the body of a young boy. While this resurrected him, it cost him nearly all his stored power, leaving him with a drastically reduced grimoire of a single page and unable to fulfill the combat duties of the Wizard King, though his mind and will remain unchanged.

However, Julius's story takes a tragic and climactic turn when the ultimate secret of his existence is unveiled. The immense anxiety and unease he felt after the Spade Kingdom battles, which he could not explain, are revealed to be because he is the human host for Astaroth, the ruler of the underworld who possesses the magic of Time. The true personality behind this possession is Lucius Zogratis, a member of the Zogratis family that includes the Dark Triad. For his entire life, Julius was effectively a constructed personality of Lucius, allowed to live and act independently in order to observe humanity and achieve his goal of world peace through subjugation. Horrified by his true purpose as he discovers it, Julius desperately begs Damnatio Kira to kill him to prevent Lucius from awakening. He fails, and Lucius takes full control, halting time on Damnatio and revealing the true master of the Clover Kingdom. In this final revelation, Julius the Magic Emperor ceases to exist, his body and soul subsumed by Lucius Zogratis, who now wields the combined powers of Time, Soul, and the devils of the underworld in a campaign to remake the world.
