Description
Ashen Eye, also known as Hai no Me, is an ancient and immortal Faerie who appears as a secondary antagonist within the story. This being is incredibly old, having lived for thousands of years, and holds a complex, often troublesome fascination with the world of humans and mages.

In terms of appearance, Ashen Eye has an androgynous form that is typically concealed beneath a brown, nomad-like shroud and veil, and it carries a simple wooden staff. What is visible of its body shows two thin, almost mummified-looking limbs, though it actually possesses four arms, keeping the other two hidden within its robes. Beneath the shroud, its face features three purple eyes with distinctive spiraling pupils, and it also has what appear to be scorpion-like appendages.

The personality of Ashen Eye is defined by a deep-seated love of mischief and the observation of intense emotion, particularly pain and struggle. It often plays dark games with humans where the penalty for losing is a terrible tragedy, though there is always a way to win for those who are clever enough. It may offer cryptic hints to its victims and does not seem to mind losing, as its primary source of satisfaction is witnessing the struggle itself. It finds pain to be the most interesting emotion to observe and regards the sight of a human shaken to the core of their soul as a form of love. Ashen Eye appears to hold a dislike for mages, believing they enslave and bind Faeries, which is a reason it often targets the mage Elias Ainsworth and his apprentice, Chise Hatori.

Ashen Eye’s motivations are not rooted in malice or a desire for power, but rather in a search for amusement and a way to alleviate its own boredom. It is drawn to individuals who are struggling or who display a strong will, as it finds their emotional journeys entertaining. This is why it takes a keen interest in both Chise Hatori, a Sleigh Beggy with a tragic past, and Joseph, an immortal man cursed with unending pain. Once Joseph finally chooses to stop struggling and accept his fate, Ashen Eye loses all interest in him and abandons him.

Within the story, Ashen Eye serves as a recurring agent of chaos and a catalyst for trials that test the main characters. It first appears at the home of Chise and Elias, bestowing upon Chise an animal skin that forcibly transforms her into a fox, ostensibly as a test of her loyalty to Elias. Its most significant intervention involves a young girl named Stella Barklem. After overhearing Stella angrily wish her younger brother Ethan would disappear, Ashen Eye literally grants her wish, kidnapping the boy and erasing all memories of his existence from his family and friends. It then challenges Chise and Stella to find Ethan and the captured Elias before sundown, and it congratulates them upon their success, warning Stella to be careful of her words. Later, Ashen Eye collaborates with the antagonist Joseph, providing him with information about Chise being a Sleigh Beggy. During the final confrontation with Joseph, Ashen Eye attempts to help him escape, only to be decapitated by Elias, an injury from which it quickly recovers due to its immortality.

Ashen Eye has several key relationships that evolve throughout the story. It regards Chise Hatori with amusement, finding beauty in her many struggles. Its relationship with Joseph is one of detached observation; it assists him only as long as his constant fight for survival remains interesting to watch. The most significant development occurs with Stella Barklem. After she declares her intention to protect Chise, Ashen Eye is so intrigued by her spirit that it forms a magical contract with her, becoming something akin to her familiar to see if she can uphold her pledge. This connection shows a degree of respect and genuine interest on the part of the Faerie.

The development of Ashen Eye is subtle, as its core nature remains largely unchanged. However, its relationship with Stella marks a notable shift from being a distant tormentor to a contracted observer. It continues to watch over her, even intercepting a letter from Chise to warn Stella of potential danger. While it still does not fully comprehend human emotions, its interactions with Stella suggest a growing, albeit still alien, form of investment in a single human’s journey.

Ashen Eye possesses a number of notable abilities befitting its ancient nature. It wields extremely potent magic, strong enough to briefly overwhelm and confine Elias. Its known skills include teleportation using black smoke or shadow portals, the ability to erase the very memory of a person's existence from the minds of others, and immortality that makes it nearly impossible to kill, as demonstrated when it effortlessly recovered from being decapitated.
