Description
Occhi di Cenere, whose original name is Ashen Eye, is an ancient faerie who appears in the anime The Ancient Magus' Bride. He is among the oldest beings of the fae world, and Elias Ainsworth refers to him as an old one, placing him in the same category of powerful, ancient entities as Oberon and Titania. He has lived for thousands of years and long predates modern human society.
In appearance, he is androgynous, with silver eyes and a modest stature. He dresses like a desert-wandering nomad, wearing a brown shroud and veils and carrying a simple wooden staff. His attire reflects his nature as a traveler who drifts through the human world without truly belonging to it.
In personality, he is capricious and mischievous. Rather than causing outright physical harm, he delights in playing with human minds and the social order, setting up situations that expose human weakness, desire, and folly. Much of his mischief stems from boredom; having lived for millennia, he seeks amusement in the lives of mortals and remains endlessly curious about human bonds and emotions, which are foreign to him.
His role in the story is tied to the arc involving the human girl Stella Barklem. He becomes fascinated with Stella and, seeing the fragility and brevity of her human life, takes an interest in making her his apprentice, offering her an escape from her fate. His interference in the village where Stella lives creates a crisis of confusion and displaced lives, and he comes into direct conflict with Chise Hatori and Elias Ainsworth. Chise opposes him not through force but through resolve and wit, entering into his game of bargains to undo the harm he has caused. In the end, Ashen Eye, having found the affair amusing, departs as he arrived, a wandering presence that does not linger.
His relationship with Chise is one of opposition but also curiosity. He observes her bond with Elias with something like envy or wonder, and her willingness to sacrifice herself for others intrigues him. With Elias, he shares the mutual recognition of one old being toward another, and Elias treats him with caution. With Stella, he is at once predatory and almost generous, offering her a form of eternity, but on terms that would separate her from her human life.
As a character, he undergoes little personal development, which fits his nature as an ancient and largely static being. The events with Chise and Stella leave him with a new curiosity about humans, but they do not fundamentally change him. He remains a roving trickster of the fae world, ancient, powerful, and ultimately unreadable.
His abilities reflect his age and status. He wields powerful fae magic capable of affecting human minds and the order of their lives, and he operates according to fae rules of bargains and games, which makes him dangerous even when he appears merely amused. His true power is comparable to the highest fae, and he is not easily overcome by conventional magic, as Chise discovers when she must outwit him rather than overwhelm him.
