Movie
Description
Junichirō Tanizaki is a member of the Armed Detective Agency who, on the surface, appears to be the most ordinary person in an organization filled with individuals who have dark and dramatic pasts. Within the agency, his work is similar to general affairs, handling various behind-the-scenes tasks to keep things running smoothly. He was once part of a test for Atsushi Nakajima’s entrance exam, where he pretended to hold a grudge against the agency by taking hostages, revealing that he has a generally agreeable personality and has difficulty refusing a smiling request.
Despite his seemingly normal demeanor, Tanizaki possesses a deeply intense and obsessive side when it comes to his younger sister, Naomi. He is a devoted siscon who values his sister on a level far beyond law or morality, cherishing her more than anything else in the world. While he is usually embarrassed by Naomi’s dangerously brother-loving behavior, his own devotion becomes frighteningly apparent when she is threatened. In such moments, his eyes become dead and relentless, and he has shown a willingness to kill or use any means necessary to protect her.
In the movie Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple, Tanizaki teams up with his colleague Doppo Kunikida to head to a meeting point with the Special Division for Unusual Powers. Their goal is to gather information about a mysterious series of suicide cases involving ability users. Upon arriving, they discover the body of a Special Division agent, along with a knife stabbed into an apple, a signature symbol of the chaos enveloping the city.
As the fog created by Tatsuhiko Shibusawa spreads across Yokohama, it causes ability users to be attacked and separated from their own powers. Tanizaki is forced to confront and fight against his own ability, which has manifested separately from him. Since his skill is not meant for direct combat but rather for ambushes and deception, he struggles significantly in this confrontation and continues to suffer throughout the ordeal. After the situation created by Shibusawa is finally resolved, Tanizaki joins the rest of the party, appearing tattered and worn from the difficult battle.
Key relationships in his life include his sister Naomi, for whom his fierce protectiveness serves as his primary motivation, and his agency partners like Kunikida and Atsushi Nakajima, with whom he often works on missions. While he does not have a dark past like some other members, the lengths to which he will go for Naomi reveal a less-than-completely-normal individual. His development often centers on his ability to utilize his deceptive powers strategically, even when pushed to his emotional limits.
Tanizaki’s notable ability is named Light Snow, or Sasameyuki. This power allows him to create a space where snow falls within a certain area and turn that space into a screen. With this screen, he can erase the appearance of himself, other people, or landmarks, or project three-dimensional images. The illusions are realistic enough to fool surveillance cameras and, in certain instances, can even take on a physical form, making it an ability highly recognized for its effectiveness in assassination and deception. He has used this power to create fake videos to trick enemies, such as making a truck driver believe he was on a road to cause a crash, and to strangle opponents with illusory projections.
