Description
Barrow is a traveling merchant of mixed heritage, being a half-blood of the Iorph race. Unlike the pure-blooded Iorph who are renowned for remaining eternally youthful, Barrow ages slowly but at a more accelerated rate than his kin, giving him a noticeably older and more mature appearance. He shares the characteristic blonde hair and red eyes of the Iorph, but he typically keeps his hair hidden under a black and white bandana. His attire consists of a long yellow coat over light brown pants, complemented by dark brown thigh-high boots and gloves. An array of colorful belts and pouches adorns his outfit, and he keeps a knife sheathed on his hip for protection.

Barrow typically speaks with a witty and sarcastic tone, often presenting himself as carefree and disinterested in the troubles of others. He is frequently seen drinking alcohol, which contributes to his laid-back demeanor. Despite this casual and somewhat cynical exterior, he possesses a good-natured core and demonstrates genuine concern for specific individuals. This is particularly evident in his interactions with Maquia, the protagonist, whom he aids on multiple occasions.

Barrow first encounters Maquia during the aftermath of a dragon attack on her homeland. He comes across her near a raided caravan and briefly assists her before she departs with an orphaned human baby she names Ariel. Later, in the human capital of Mezarte, he intervenes to save Maquia from being captured by the royal guard, an act that highlights his willingness to risk his own safety for her. Barrow maintains a connection with the Iorph elder Racine, and his knowledge of Maquia runs deep; it is revealed through supplementary material that Racine and Barrow are actually half-siblings, sharing the same mother but having different fathers. This familial link explains his protective attitude toward Maquia and his personal understanding of Racine's wisdom.

His primary role in the narrative is that of an ally and occasional savior for Maquia as she navigates the challenges of raising a human child in a world where she will not age. He provides practical help, such as transportation and rescue from danger, and also serves as a link to her lost Iorph heritage. Barrow shows interest in the wellbeing of Ariel, inquiring about the boy as he grows into adulthood.

Over the course of the story, Barrow's development is subtle but meaningful. While he begins as a seemingly detached observer, his repeated interventions demonstrate a growing, if understated, commitment to Maquia's journey. In the film's final moments, after Maquia has witnessed the death of an elderly Ariel, Barrow is seen waiting for her with a cart. When he sees her crying, he laughs, remarking that the elder Racine would have been amused to see her face as well. This moment encapsulates his character: outwardly harsh or amused by suffering, but ultimately present and loyal, offering a path forward for Maquia to continue her long life. His mixed blood grants him the notable ability of slow aging, allowing him to persist through decades of human history while retaining his memories and physical capabilities, though he does not possess the complete immortality of a pure Iorph.
