Description
Käpt'n Black, also known as Kuro, is the former captain of the Black Cat Pirates and a major antagonist in the Syrup Village segment of the anime special One Piece Episode of East Blue: Luffy and His Four Friends' Great Adventure. He is a tall, slender man with green hair combed back and a pair of round glasses, typically dressed in a black pirate coat bearing his crew's insignia or, while undercover, in a formal black butler's suit.

Kuro is a man of immense intelligence and calculation, earning the epithet Kuro of the Thousand Plans due to his elaborate schemes that almost never fail. This intellect is said to be second only to Ben Beckman's in the East Blue. However, his genius is matched by a cold, sadistic, and utterly remorseless personality. He is a master of deception, able to maintain the gentle and helpful facade of a butler for three years without raising suspicion. Underneath that mask lies a ruthless individual who considers his own crew members expendable and will kill anyone standing between him and his goals without hesitation. He desires wealth and a quiet, luxurious life free from the constant pursuit of the Marines, which drives his entire scheme.

His primary motivation is to secure Kaya's family fortune and live in peace. To achieve this, he concocted a long-term plan: he faked his own death with the help of his hypnotist subordinate Jango, then assumed the identity of Klahadore (also referred to as Beauregard in some sources). He presented himself as a starving wanderer to Kaya's father, who took him in, and after the father's death, he became the loyal butler to the young heiress. Over the following years, he carefully manipulated Kaya into trusting him completely. His plan was to have her sign a will leaving everything to him, then have his old crew attack the village, kill Kaya, and eliminate all witnesses. He intended to then kill his own crew afterward to erase any connection to his past, leaving him free to enjoy his new life.

In the story, Kuro plays the role of the cunning and dangerous antagonist that forces the Straw Hat Pirates to intervene. His relationship with Kaya is entirely built on manipulation; she sees him as a kind caregiver, while he views her only as a tool. His dynamic with Usopp is particularly significant: Usopp is the first to see through Kuro's disguise and tries to warn the village, but nobody believes him because of his reputation as a liar. This conflict drives Usopp to prove his bravery and protect his friend. Kuro's interactions with Luffy are direct and combative, as Luffy sees through his schemes and engages him in battle. He holds a similar enmity toward Zoro, who fights his elite subordinates, and Nami, who aids in the plan to protect Kaya.

Kuro undergoes little personal development in the special; he remains an unrepentant schemer whose grand plan is foiled by the Straw Hats. His defeat marks a turning point for Usopp, who gains confidence and earns his place as a Straw Hat.

Notable abilities include his superhuman speed, which allows him to move faster than the naked eye can track, leaving only a blur or the damage caused by his attacks. This speed is compared to the Soru technique used by CP9, though Kuro cannot see what he is striking while moving at full velocity. He wears long, katana-like claws on each finger of both hands, which he uses in a signature attack called Shakushi, or Death Scoop. This sweeping technique kills everything in its path indiscriminately, including his own allies. His cunning and tactical mind are equally formidable, as he meticulously accounts for every variable in his plans. Overall, Kuro is portrayed as a cold-hearted genius whose greed and cruelty make him a memorable early obstacle for the Straw Hat Pirates.
