TV-Series
Description
Jinyu, also known as Julia Jinyu, is an extraterrestrial being who appears as a primary character in FLCL Progressive. She is introduced as a serious and mysterious woman who becomes the maid for the Hibajiri family, specifically taking on the role of protector for the young protagonist, Hidomi Hibajiri. Her most fundamental characteristic is that she is the other half of the alien Haruko Haruhara, representing a split in a single entity. While Haruko embodies a brash, reckless, and selfish personality, Jinyu is the more mature, calm, and responsible half, acting as the voice of reason.
Physically, Jinyu is distinct from Haruko, possessing long, spiky white hair tied in a ponytail, red eyes, and darker skin. She has vertical red stripes under her eyes and often wears unique sunglasses with a black tint and an orange, V-shaped rim. Her typical outfit consists of a green tube top under a short lavender jacket, black leggings, and white boots with purple stripes. While working as a maid for Hidomi's family cafe, she wears a French maid uniform.
Jinyu's personal motivations are centered on protection and a sense of moral responsibility. She is determined to protect the residents of Mabase from the threats posed by both Medical Mechanica and her counterpart, Haruko, whom she refers to as Raharu. Her actions are driven by a desire to do what is right, which includes keeping the powerful space pirate Atomsk free from being captured and exploited. This contrasts sharply with Haruko's obsessive goal of capturing Atomsk to absorb his power. Jinyu claims to love Atomsk, and this love represents a suppressed emotion from her shared history with Haruko, whereas Haruko's side is consumed by a selfish craving for his strength.
In the story, Jinyu initially tests Hidomi's latent N.O. powers by running her over with her car. Upon confirming her abilities, she inserts herself into the girl's life by becoming the family's live-in housekeeper, serving as a guardian against extraterrestrial dangers. Her role is largely adversarial to Haruko's, as she works to thwart Haruko's attempts to manipulate Hidomi and other residents to further her own agenda. The two are not beyond temporary cooperation, such as when they unite to fight a common enemy in Medical Mechanica, but their fundamental conflict over Atomsk's fate makes them irreconcilable.
Jinyu has several key relationships that define her role. Her connection with Haruko is the most significant, as they are two parts of a single being who are constantly in conflict. Jinyu's ability to understand Haruko's feelings comes from once being part of her, but their opposing natures lead to a violent confrontation where Haruko ultimately absorbs Jinyu back into herself. Her relationship with Hidomi is that of a stern but genuine protector. She offers the girl advice about her pessimistic attitude and shields her from Haruko's manipulative schemes. She also saves and heals Ko Ide, a friend of Hidomi's, warning him to stay away from Haruko. Her relationship with Atomsk is one of admiration and devotion; she was once flying through space with him but was abandoned, an event which may have led to her current form.
Throughout Progressive, Jinyu undergoes a significant, if brief, development arc. She begins as a determined protector and adversary to Haruko. After a series of attempts to persuade Haruko to abandon her pursuit of Atomsk, she is attacked and devoured by her other half. Jinyu accepts this fate, acknowledging that while they are the same being, they are fundamentally different. She is later freed from Haruko during a climactic battle and is briefly bonded with Atomsk before he departs, after which she comforts a distraught Haruko, showing a moment of reconciliation.
Jinyu possesses abilities that rival those of Haruko, making her a formidable force. She displays superhuman strength, such as lifting her car with ease, and can cover herself in a glowing blue aura that parallels Haruko's red aura, both of which are manifestations of Atomsk's power. She wields a powerful white guitar that allows her to fly and fight, and she drives a Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible that functions similarly to Haruko's Vespa, capable of transforming into different forms, including a robot, and flying. She demonstrates skill in healing, as seen when she tends to Ide's injuries. Her strength is considered equal to Haruko's, with her defeat in their final battle occurring only because she momentarily let her guard down.
