TV-Series
Description
Kana Koumoto is the seventeen-year-old protagonist of the third FLCL season. She is a high school student with short, brown hair styled in a bob cut and round brown eyes. Her typical school attire consists of a blue jacket and skirt, a yellow vest, a white undershirt with a loosely worn red tie, and brown loafers that she herself acknowledges are worn-out. She accessorizes with a small, pink backpack, a white apron for her part-time job, and a gold hair clip with a green flower near her left temple, and she paints her fingernails to match this green accessory.
In contrast to previous protagonists in the series, Kana is more outwardly enthusiastic and energetic. She spends her days with her three close friends, Mossan, Hijiri, and Pets, living a generally relaxed life filled with gossip and shopping. She is content with her seemingly unremarkable days and contributes to this sense of sameness, believing that everything around her will always be the same. Despite her cheerful exterior, she harbors a deep-seated unwillingness to become an adult and is unsure of her path in life, a fact that contributes to her emotional turmoil. She can be hyper-emotional and has difficulty controlling her feelings, often crying without even realizing it when faced with danger or stressful situations.
Kana’s primary motivation is to maintain the status quo of her youth and avoid the inevitable changes that come with growing up. She lacks clear goals for her future, which leads her to insert herself into the lives and problems of her friends as a way to avoid confronting her own anxieties. She becomes deeply invested in Hijiri’s romantic relationship and pushes to help Mossan with her fashion design dreams, sometimes without being asked, believing she is being helpful. Her actions are often well-intentioned but can be perceived as selfish or misguided by those around her.
As the central figure of the story, Kana's role is to navigate the chaotic transition from adolescence to adulthood. Her life is upended by the arrival of the alien Haruko, who activates a latent power in Kana’s head known as an N.O. channel. This power manifests as extreme headaches and can be used to transport objects from another dimension, often attracting giant robots that she and Haruko must then battle. Her N.O. channel is initially stubborn, requiring force to fully activate and produce objects like a guitar or a food van.
Kana’s key relationships form the emotional core of her journey. She is part of a tight-knit group of friends. Hijiri is a model she idolizes and whose maturity she envies. Mossan is a hardworking, goal-oriented friend who provides a grounded presence. Pets is her oldest and closest friend, and their relationship is the most complex and pivotal. Kana also has a confused and denied affection for a classmate named Sasaki. While her friends push her toward him, she ultimately feels not ready for a relationship. Haruko acts as a catalyst for Kana's growth, manipulating situations and people, including Sasaki, to provoke emotional responses from Kana and trigger her N.O. abilities.
Throughout the story, Kana undergoes significant development. She is forced to confront her selfish tendencies when Pets accuses her of only pretending to know her friends and of using them to avoid her own problems. This confrontation serves as a wake-up call, pushing Kana to finally confront her fears of change and loss head-on. Her journey concludes with her accepting that things cannot stay the same and learning to express her true feelings honestly, rather than masking them with false acts of sincerity.
Her notable abilities are directly tied to her emotional state. Her N.O. channel is activated in her head, sprouting a small flower from her forehead, which allows Haruko to pull a guitar out. While she often freezes in danger, she has demonstrated incredible skill in moments of high pressure, such as driving a food van she produced from her N.O. channel with expert control, despite not having a driver's license.
