Description
Goro, originally known only by his code, Code 056, is a central character who serves as the male half of the paired pilots known as Parasites, operating the FRANXX mecha Delphinium alongside his partner, Ichigo (Code 015). His name, Goro, was given to him by his childhood friend Hiro, deriving from the numbers five and six in Japanese. Standing at a height of 178 cm, he is notably tall among his peers in the 13th Plantation unit.

As a child, Goro had a solitary and combative nature, frequently getting into fights with the other children. This behavior stemmed from a desire to be left alone, but his attitude changed significantly after he befriended Hiro and Ichigo, learning to value companionship and cooperation. In the present, Goro is widely recognized as the group's mood-maker and unofficial second leader, possessing an upbeat, easygoing, and mature personality. He is level-headed and rarely shaken by crises, which allows him to think rationally and make difficult decisions when others are overwhelmed. While he is fundamentally kind and considerate, he has also demonstrated a subtle, unexpectedly mischievous or "dark" side, such as when he devised elaborate pranks during a conflict between the boys and girls of the squad.

Goro is driven by a deep-seated sense of selflessness and a profound care for his friends, particularly Hiro and Ichigo, whom he has known since early childhood. His primary motivation is the well-being and safety of his squad, and he consistently prioritizes the happiness of others over his own. This is most evident in his feelings for Ichigo. Despite harboring a long-standing love for her, he suppresses these emotions for a significant portion of the story, fully aware that her affections are directed towards Hiro. He values his role as her partner and trusted confidant above his own romantic desires, demonstrating a high level of emotional maturity. Later in the narrative, his motivations evolve to include a desire to create a new future and heal the damaged Earth, taking on the challenge of restoring the planet's barren landscape.

Within the 13th Plantation squad, Goro's role is that of a stabilizer and a pillar of support. He acts as a dependable bridge between the impulsive Hiro and the emotionally driven Ichigo, often mediating conflicts and providing calm, logical counsel. As the pilot of Delphinium, he functions as the perfect counterpart to Ichigo, complementing her passionate and sometimes frantic nature with his composure and steadfastness. He frequently takes charge of tactical decisions during combat, ensuring their synchronized operation runs smoothly.

His most crucial relationship is with his partner, Ichigo. Goro is fiercely protective of her, famously exemplified in a battle where he ejected her from their FRANXX to save her from being devoured, even though it left him trapped and forced him to prepare for a suicidal self-destruct sequence to destroy the enemy. After this near-death experience, he confesses his love to her but immediately absolves her of any pressure to respond, stating that he is content simply to be by her side. This quiet devotion is a defining trait. His bond with Hiro is equally significant; they are best friends and roommates. Goro respects Hiro's determination, even when it is self-destructive, and reluctantly agrees to keep Hiro's deteriorating physical condition a secret to allow him to continue piloting with Zero Two. However, his protectiveness can override his usual calm, leading him to physically strike Hiro when he feels Hiro is recklessly throwing his life away without regard for those who care about him.

Throughout the story, Goro undergoes a subtle but important development. He begins as a boy who passively supports others from the background, content to suppress his own desires. Over time, he learns to assert his own feelings and choose his own path, declaring that he will no longer let others fight his battles for him and that he wants to live without regrets. This culminates in him openly challenging and then supporting Hiro's most dangerous decisions, ultimately forging his own independent will rather than simply following the lead of his childhood friend. In the aftermath of the final battles, Goro dedicates himself to the long-term task of terraforming and restoring life to the post-apocalyptic Earth. He eventually marries Ichigo, and they start a family, a conclusion that represents the quiet, hard-won happiness he always prioritized for others finally becoming his own.

As a pilot, Goro possesses notable abilities in combat. He is considered a highly talented and valuable Parasite, recognized for his excellent judgment and exceptional piloting skills. His greatest strengths are his composure under pressure and his ability to make split-second, life-saving decisions in the heat of battle. He is skilled in improvisation and tactical thinking, which, combined with his synchronized partnership with Ichigo, makes Delphinium a formidable unit. His self-sacrificing nature also translates into a willingness to leverage his own safety to achieve victory, a tactical edge born of his personal philosophy.
