Description
Code 090 is the leader of the parasites from Plantation 26, a position that places him in command of the 26th Unit. His life is defined by the harsh realities of his world, having become a parasite and a pilot much earlier than the members of the more famous Squad 13. Physically, he is a young man of average height with straight, short brown hair and brown eyes, dressed in the standard stamen uniform. The toll of piloting a FRANXX, however, is made tragically visible when he later reappears with his hair turned completely light grey or white, a result of the accelerated aging process that parasites undergo.

At first glance, Code 090 appears strict, pragmatic, and emotionally detached, a demeanor forged by his experience and loss. He is a serious and disciplined leader who values order and tactical efficiency. When Squad 13 first arrives at his plantation for a joint operation, he is dismissive of them, finding their unique, non-standardized FRANXX models and their practice of using personal names instead of numerical codes to be strange and pointless. He questions the value of such individuality, seeing it as impractical. Despite this blunt and somewhat condescending exterior, he is not without emotion. He is initially amiable and forthcoming, even admitting to a degree of admiration for Hiro, who is famous among the children for being the one who gave them names in the garden.

His primary motivation is the successful completion of his mission and the protection of his unit, a responsibility he carries with a heavy burden. This burden is rooted in a deep personal tragedy. Two years before the events of the story, Code 090’s unit was involved in a joint operation with Zero Two. During that mission, Zero Two acted recklessly and independently, which led to Code 090’s squad being isolated on the battlefield. His partner was killed as a direct result. This event left him with a powerful grudge and a deep-seated reluctance to ever fight alongside Zero Two again. When he is forced into a situation where he must cooperate with her, he is openly hostile and protests the decision, a reaction that Zero Two coldly dismisses with the philosophy that "weaklings die".

His role in the story is that of an experienced foil to the inexperienced but talented Squad 13. During the battle against a Gutenberg-class Klaxosaur, his leadership and tactical knowledge are on full display as he coordinates his team effectively. However, his unit becomes overwhelmed and runs out of fuel, leaving him moments from death. He is saved at the last moment by a member of Squad 13. This act of rescue is the turning point in his relationship with them. He begins to acknowledge their strength, their unique fighting style, and their surprising teamwork, earning Squad 13 his begrudging respect and recognition. From that point on, he sees them not as a burden, but as reliable and capable allies.

Code 090 undergoes a significant transformation from a skeptical traditionalist to a man who puts his faith in the unconventional. His development is most powerfully displayed in his final moments. During the operation to recapture the Grand Crevasse, he and his squad are ordered by the Seven Sages to initiate Protocol 32, a suicidal attack that requires them to self-destruct in order to immobilize a massive Super Lehman-class Klaxosaur and secure a path forward. He has already witnessed the destruction of his own home, Plantation 26. Though he hesitates, he accepts the order as an honorable sacrifice for the greater good. In his final act, he reaffirms his trust in Squad 13, whispering that he is counting on them before the bombs detonate, killing him and his entire unit heroically. His notable abilities lie not in any unique power, but in his high-level command skills, his calm demeanor under pressure, and his ability to coordinate his squad effectively in battle, making him a capable and experienced pilot of a mass-produced FRANXX.
