Description
Kaya Irimi is a ghoul and a former waitress at the Anteiku coffee shop in the 20th ward, known by the alias Black Dog. Before finding refuge at Anteiku, she was the vicious and ruthless leader of a notorious ghoul gang called the Black Dobers, recognizable for their black, Doberman-like masks. As the Black Dog, she was a rival to Enji Koma, the leader of the Ape gang, and the two groups clashed frequently. During this period, she was involved in the deaths of many associates of the CCG investigator Chuu Hachikawa and is implied to be the ghoul who disfigured his face.
In the present day of the story, Irimi presents herself as a quiet, reserved, and solemn woman who usually keeps to herself. Despite her taciturn and stoic exterior, she can become annoyed and speak her honest thoughts on subtle occasions. Having been with Kuzen Yoshimura long before becoming an employee at Anteiku, Irimi is deeply loyal to the manager, who helped her reform from her violent past. She is especially kind and acts as an elder sister or motherly figure to the younger female ghouls, Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi, often offering them guidance and support. Her motivations are largely tied to protecting Anteiku and the new family she found there, as well as seeking a form of atonement for her past sins. At one point, while facing death, she was willing to embrace it as punishment for her former life as a murderer.
Irimi plays a significant supporting role, first as a staff member at Anteiku and later as a key combatant in its defense. She participates in the mission to rescue Ken Kaneki from the Aogiri Tree, using her extraordinary sensory abilities to provide tactical information from outside their base. During the Owl Suppression Operation, the CCG's raid on Anteiku, Irimi dons her Black Dog mask and leads her former Black Dober gang in a desperate battle to protect the cafe. In this fight, she confronts her old enemy Chuu Hachikawa and is severely wounded while shielding an elderly civilian woman from his attack. She is saved from a killing blow by Ken Kaneki, an act she later reflects on with gratitude. She and Koma manage to escape the battle via Route V14.
After a period of being presumed dead, Irimi reunites with her former comrades at the new cafe:re and joyfully greets Kaneki. She continues to fight, participating in the Rushima Landing Operation against the CCG and later joining the organization Black Goat (Goat) founded by Kaneki, where she aids in logistics and front-line combat. Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Yoshimura is one of deep loyalty, as he offered her a path away from her life of violence. Her relationship with Enji Koma transformed from intense rivalry at the head of opposing gangs to a friendly, long-standing camaraderie at Anteiku, where they often bicker over small things like who makes better coffee. Her protective nature is most evident in her relationships with Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi, whom she mentors and watches over like a family member. Her dynamic with Kaneki is one of mutual respect, as she eventually defers to his leadership without opposition after he saves her life.
Irimi undergoes notable development from a murderous and savage gang leader to a composed, protective, and selfless individual who is willing to risk her own life to save an innocent person. This transformation highlights the theme of redemption, showing that a person can drift from a path of violence and find purpose in protecting a new home and family.
As a ghoul, Irimi possesses the standard physical capabilities, including superhuman strength, agility, and regeneration. Her most distinctive ability is her superhuman sense of hearing. She can differentiate the volume, type, and rhythm of sound waves to comprehend details about her surroundings and the movements of enemies, effectively allowing her to create a mental map and predict attacks. She is an ukaku-type ghoul, meaning her kagune manifests as two beetle-like wings with a tail between them, which she can use for high-speed, projectile-based attacks. Her agility and combat experience are such that she is considered an SS-rated ghoul, capable of fighting on equal terms with Special Class Investigators.
