Description
Koutarou Amon is a former First-Class Ghoul Investigator who later becomes an artificial one-eyed ghoul. His life was profoundly shaped by a traumatic childhood experience. As a young orphan, he lived happily in a Catholic orphanage cared for by a priest named Donato Porpora, whom he saw as a father. This peace was shattered when Amon discovered Donato was a ghoul who had been butchering the children in his care. Although Donato spared his life, this event left an indelible mark on Amon, leading him to be taken in by the CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul).

Driven by the conclusion that the world is wrong, Amon dedicated his life to changing it. He views ghouls as the source of this distortion and believes their eradication is the path to mending the world. This zealous sense of justice is fueled by a soft spot for children, as he is motivated to prevent others from suffering the loss of loved ones as he did. At heart, Amon is a likable, sympathetic, and dedicated individual, though his crusade can lead him to morally questionable acts, such as desecrating a grave for an investigation, which he justifies as serving a greater good. Despite his strong exterior, he is deeply insecure and fearful of losing people close to him, a fear that becomes a central part of his character following the death of his mentor, Kureo Mado. After being spared in a fight by the ghoul Ken Kaneki, Amon begins to question the absolute righteousness of his cause and develops a strong curiosity and desire to understand the ghoul he once saw only as a monster.

Amon's motivations are deeply personal. His entire career as an investigator is a response to his childhood trauma, seeking to eliminate the kind of threat that Donato represented. This desire for justice is also a search for answers. He is haunted by the question of why Donato, who killed so many children, allowed him to live. His repeated and complex confrontations with Ken Kaneki, another one-eyed ghoul, become a way for him to seek an answer about the nature of ghouls and perhaps about his own past.

In the story, Amon serves as a primary antagonist to Kaneki and a representative of the CCG's human perspective. He enters the 20th ward as the partner of the seasoned and ruthless investigator Kureo Mado, and together they hunt ghouls, including Ryouko and Hinami Fueguchi. Mado's death at the hands of the ghoul known as Rabbit (Touka Kirishima) profoundly affects Amon, leaving him with intense guilt and an obsession with finding those responsible. Promoted to First Class, he is assigned a new partner, Akira Mado, his late mentor's daughter, with whom he initially has a tense relationship. Amon plays a significant role in several key events, including the 11th Ward Battle against Aogiri Tree, where he kills the Bin Brothers, and the raid on Dr. Kanou's lab, where he confronts an out-of-control Kaneki. During the Owl Suppression Operation in Anteiku, he engages in his final and most brutal battle with Kaneki as a human, losing an arm in the process. After being found wounded, he and his comrade Seidou Takizawa are ambushed by the ghoul Tatara, and Amon is officially declared dead.

Amon's key relationships define his journey. His bond with his mentor Kureo Mado is one of deep respect and admiration, and Mado's death becomes a source of lasting guilt. His relationship with Akira Mado evolves from a difficult professional pairing to one of deep trust and mutual care, with Akira developing romantic feelings for him. His complex dynamic with Ken Kaneki is central to his development; he moves from seeing Kaneki as a simple target to a rival who forces him to question his entire worldview. Donato Porpora, his ghoul foster father, is the source of his trauma and the unanswered questions that drive him. Finally, his friendship with fellow investigator Seidou Takizawa is tested when both are later transformed into one-eyed ghouls.

Amon undergoes a dramatic transformation. After being presumed dead, he reappears alive as an artificial one-eyed ghoul, having been experimented on by Dr. Kanou using the kakuhou of Yoshimura. This transformation forces a profound shift in his identity. Having become the very thing he swore to destroy, he can no longer hold onto his previous hatred. He becomes consumed by emptiness and feels his past life was a waste. However, this experience leads to greater introspection. He can no longer see ghouls as mere monsters and eventually accepts that his own hatred was a manipulation of his feelings for Donato, allowing him to make peace with his past. He continues to fight, now as a ghoul, still trying to protect others and find a place in the world.

As an investigator, Amon was a formidable physical fighter, able to subdue weak ghouls without a quinque. He wielded several quinques, including the club-like Doujima 1/2, the shield-like Kura, and the Arata Proto II armored suit. After becoming a one-eyed ghoul, he gained the typical traits of ghoul physiology, including a kakugan in his right eye and an ukaku-type kagune, which allows him to fire powerful projectiles. His right forearm and hand are themselves made of kagune and can form a blade. Amon also possesses a grotesque and powerful kakuja, a full-body armor that gives him immense strength and the ability to fire large drill-shaped projectiles, though this form is difficult to control and often emerges under extreme duress. Due to hybrid vigor, his abilities as a half-ghoul are said to be more potent than those of a natural-born ghoul.
