Description
Charlotte Isoir is a minor yet memorable character from the anime The Ryuo's Work Is Never Done! She is a young foreign girl from France, attending a French school in Kyoto, which makes her an international student in Japan. Her age is notably younger than most of the other characters, being only six years old and in the first grade of elementary school. She often goes by the affectionate nicknames Char or Char-chan and has a distinctive lisp in her speech, which adds to her childlike charm. Charlotte is a member of the elementary school shogi research group known as the JS Kenkyuukai, or JS Research Society, where she interacts with other young female shogi players.

Charlotte's personality is innocent, curious, and deeply affectionate. She finds everything about Japan fascinating and approaches the world with a wide-eyed sense of wonder. Among the members of her shogi research group, she is often considered the most ordinary in terms of skill, as she has not yet shown the same level of prodigious talent as her peers. She is, at her core, a sweet and earnest child, but she also displays a surprising level of determination when she sets her mind to something. Her feelings for the main protagonist, Yaichi Kuzuryu, are very strong; she becomes attached to him almost immediately and harbors a simple, sincere crush on him, seeing him as her future fiancé or bridegroom.

Her primary motivation throughout the story is her desire to form a meaningful connection with Yaichi through shogi. She desperately wants to become his disciple, a wish she pursues with persistent hope. This desire stems not only from her affection for him but also from a more poignant realization that she will eventually have to return to France. She believes that by sharing the bond of shogi with Yaichi, she can maintain a lasting link to him and to her happy experiences in Japan, no matter where she lives. This gives her goals a layer of emotional depth beyond a simple childhood crush.

Charlotte's role in the narrative is twofold. On a surface level, she is a key source of comedic relief, as her innocent declarations of love for Yaichi, combined with his awkward responses, fuel the running gag of his suspicion of being a "lolicon" (a person with a preference for young girls). Her presence often puts Yaichi in comically compromising situations with other characters who are protective of him or suspicious of his intentions. However, she also has a more serious role in the story, particularly during the Naniwa Kings tournament arc. Despite being considered the weakest player in her group, with others hoping she might merely win a single game, she undergoes rigorous training. Her secret practice with another skilled player and her sheer determination allow her to achieve a surprising victory streak, advancing to the finals of the competition. Her matches are characterized by intense focus and effort, to the point of physical exhaustion, which demonstrates that her abilities, while not naturally overwhelming, can be amplified by her willpower.

Her key relationships are centered around the JS Research Society. She is good friends with her fellow members, including Ai Hinatsuru, Mio Mizukoshi, and Ayano Sadato, with whom she shares her shogi studies and daily life. Her most significant relationship is with Yaichi Kuzuryu, whom she idolizes and wishes to marry. She is not discouraged by his initial refusal to take her as a disciple and continues to view him as her destined partner. Another important, more subtle relationship is with a more experienced shogi player who privately agrees to train her. This mentor recognizes her earnestness and, despite initial reluctance, dedicates time to teaching her, which becomes the crucial factor in her tournament success.

Charlotte shows notable character development over the course of the story. While she begins as a very minor character known mainly for her cute lisp and comedic lines, she proves that she is capable of significant growth as a shogi player when she is given proper guidance and support. Her run in the Naniwa Kings tournament marks a turning point, showing that her commitment to shogi is genuine and that she can rise to a challenge through hard work, even if she lacks the natural brilliance of characters like Ai or Yaichi. Her journey is not about becoming a prodigy, but about finding her own strength and proving that her love for the game and for the people in it is a powerful motivator. Her story arc touches on themes of effort, belonging, and the desire to create lasting bonds across distances.

Regarding her notable abilities, Charlotte is consistently portrayed as an amateur-level shogi player whose skills are not exceptional compared to the prodigies around her. In fact, the protagonist himself determines that she lacks natural talent for the game, especially when compared to what he and other skilled players were capable of at her age. Her lack of ability is highlighted by the fact that she is the only member of her research group who has not qualified for the training group, a more serious and competitive tier of shogi. However, what she lacks in innate talent, she compensates for with an incredible ability to concentrate and persevere. During her important tournament matches, she becomes so deeply focused that she pushes herself to her physical limits, even causing the blood vessels in her eyes to burst from strain. This tenacity allows her to overcome initial expectations and achieve more than anyone predicted, proving that her determination is her greatest and most notable skill.
