Description
Galand, also known as Galand of Truth, is a major antagonist introduced in The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments. He is an ancient and powerful demon, recognized as one of the elite Ten Commandments, a group of warriors who serve the Demon King. His physical appearance is distinctive and imposing; he takes the form of a tall, lean, red-skinned humanoid with features resembling a suit of living armor. At over four meters tall, his presence alone is enough to intimidate most opponents.
In terms of personality, Galand embodies the duality of a seasoned warrior. On one hand, he is battle-crazed and sadistic, showing little to no mercy to those he deems weak or uninteresting. He attacks with the clear intent to kill and expresses joy at the prospect of fighting powerful enemies after being sealed for three millennia. He holds a particular disdain for mages, believing they spoil the thrill of a fair fight. On the other hand, Galand possesses a more casual and even humorous side. He has a genuine fondness for alcohol, often drinking with his comrade Melascula, and is frequently seen as an impulsive and somewhat comedic figure who does not always take himself too seriously. Despite his brutal nature, he displays a degree of loyalty and camaraderie, showing that he genuinely cares for his fellow demons, particularly Melascula, whom he protects in battle.
Galand's background is steeped in the ancient Holy War that took place 3,000 years prior to the main story. He was one of the first warriors chosen by the Demon King to receive a Commandment, making him a veteran member of the Ten Commandments. During that era, he fought against the Goddess Clan and the other races, participating in key battles against the Four Archangels alongside comrades like Derieri and Monspeet. Along with the rest of his clan, he was eventually sealed away in the Coffin of Eternal Darkness after the demons lost the war. His primary motivation upon being released is to reclaim the glory of the Demon Clan, exact revenge on their enemies, and enjoy the thrill of combat once more.
In the story, Galand is among the first of the Ten Commandments to be fully freed, serving as an initial demonstration of the overwhelming power the protagonists must face. He arrives in the kingdom of Camelot, easily overwhelming Meliodas and the other Seven Deadly Sins present, and only retreats because he is tricked by Gowther's illusion magic into believing he had killed them. His role is that of a major hurdle, showcasing the gap in strength between the Sins and the Commandments.
His most significant relationships are with his fellow demons. He is often paired with Melascula of Faith, and the two share a close bond as friends and battle partners. Their interactions, which range from getting drunk together to coordinating attacks, highlight a rare, lighthearted side of Galand. He also holds a rivalry of sorts with Meliodas, the former captain of the Ten Commandments who betrayed them, and is eager to fight him at full strength. Like all members of the group, he answers to Zeldris, the leader of the Ten Commandments, though he sometimes chafes against his orders.
Galand undergoes a notable, if short, arc defined by his own power. He is immensely proud and confident, to the point of arrogance. However, after being utterly defeated by a revived Meliodas, he experiences humiliation and vows to win their next encounter. This desire to prove himself leads to his final downfall when he faces Escanor, the Lion's Sin of Pride. Believing Escanor to be weak, Galand proposes a fight where the loser must obey the winner. When he realizes Escanor's power is far beyond his own, Galand attempts to flee, thus breaking his own promise. This act, a lie in the form of a broken agreement, triggers his own Commandment of Truth, instantly turning him into stone. Later, the demon Estarossa shatters his petrified body, leading to his death. His development is one of ironic poetic justice; a being who punishes liars is ultimately destroyed by his own deceitful act.
Galand possesses several notable abilities that make him a fearsome opponent. His base power level is measured at 27,000, which is comprised of immense physical strength (24,000) significantly overshadowing his magical ability (1,000). He wields a large scythe as his primary weapon, with techniques like Zanbarazan, a rapid thrusting attack. His unique magic is Critical Over, which converts his magical energy directly into pure physical power. When activated, his form becomes more sinister and spiky, and his power level skyrockets to 40,000, making him an almost unstoppable physical force. His defining power, however, is his Commandment: Truth. Anyone who speaks a lie in his presence is immediately turned to stone, a curse that even affects Galand himself if he lies. This ability forces his opponents to fight him with pure, unfiltered honesty, as any attempt at deception or a false promise is met with instant petrification.
