Description
Merascyla, also known as Melascula, is a significant antagonist in the Seven Deadly Sins anime, specifically appearing as a member of the Demon King's elite warrior unit, the Ten Commandments, where she holds the position of the Commandment of Faith. Her origins lie not in a noble demon lineage but in the wilds of the Demon Realm, where she began as a small, venomous snake. Over the course of three hundred years, she bathed in the potent miasma of that world, a process that dramatically mutated her into a giant, powerful serpent with immense magical abilities. This serpentine form is her true body, but she prefers to interact with the world by taking on the appearance of a young human woman with straight pink hair, often dressed in a sleeveless leotard and surrounded by a cloud of darkness. In this human guise, she stands at 154 centimeters tall. Her personality is a blend of cold calculation and profound cruelty. She is arrogant and condescending, viewing all other races, especially humans, as inferior beings to be toyed with or consumed. She possesses a sadistic love for suffering and takes particular pleasure in manipulating souls, raising the dead, and forcing them to turn on their loved ones, showing no mercy or pity for her victims. However, beneath her menacing exterior lies a surprising fondness for strong drink, and she has been known to temporarily spare those who offer her fine alcohol.

Within the Ten Commandments, Merascylla is often partnered with the impulsive and battle-hungry Galand. In this dynamic, she typically acts as the more patient and level-headed strategist, frequently needing to restrain him from acting rashly or breaking the rules of their games. Her primary motivation is the absolute revival of the Demon King and the restoration of the Demon Clan's dominion over Britannia, to which she is fiercely loyal. She also has a personal fascination with collecting and consuming unique souls, which she refers to as her favorite food. Her role in the story is that of a magical threat, using her unique abilities to trap, resurrect, and psychologically torment her opponents rather than relying on brute physical strength. One of her most notable early actions is using a forbidden spell to resurrect the fairy Elaine, among countless other soldiers, turning them into vengeful puppets to attack the Seven Deadly Sins.

Merascylla’s abilities are diverse and formidable, with a measured power level of 34,000, the vast majority of which comes from her magical prowess. Her signature power is her Commandment, named Faith. Anyone who demonstrates disbelief or a lack of faith in her presence will have their eyes instantly burned out of their skulls, a punishment she inflicts without hesitation. Her magical techniques include Hell Gate, which allows her to create portals connecting two different locations, even across different worlds. She can trap enemies within a Cursed Cocoon of Darkness, which drains their energy and uses it to empower reanimated soldiers. Her most terrifying skill is the Forbidden Technique, a spell that reanimates the dead by amplifying their lingering grudges and regrets, turning them into powerful, hate-fueled servants that can think and fight as they did in life, but with enhanced physical abilities. She can also directly extract and consume the souls of living beings.

Over the course of the series, Merascylla experiences a distinct, if not redemptive, arc of defeat. Her overconfidence often leads to her downfall, most famously when she attempts to consume the soul of Escanor, the Lion's Sin of Pride. His soul, infused with the power of the Sun, burns her from the inside out, leaving her severely wounded. Later, during the battle for the city of Corand, she manages to trap Captain Meliodas in her cocoon and fights the rest of the Sins in her giant snake form. However, she is overwhelmed by their combined teamwork. In a decisive moment, the goddess powers of Elizabeth Liones are awakened, who uses a purification spell to forcibly expel the hundred years' worth of demonic miasma from Merascylla's body. This act reverts the fearsome Commandment to her original, harmless state: a tiny, ordinary poisonous snake, which is promptly captured and sealed in a test tube by the mage Merlin, effectively ending her role as a direct threat.
