OVA
Description
Haibara Jirou is a supporting character from the soccer anime DAYS. He is a third-year student at Seiseki High School and plays as a right-side back, wearing jersey number 2. Physically, Haibara is notably small for a soccer player, standing at 159 centimeters tall and weighing 55 kilograms. He was born on October 13th in Yamanashi Prefecture and has A-type blood.
Despite his small stature, Haibara is a bundle of energy on the field and is known for his free-spirited and cheerful personality. He often has an innocent smile and serves as a positive mood maker for the team. However, beneath this lighthearted exterior lies a player who struggles with self-doubt. Unlike some of his teammates who became regulars earlier, Haibara only secured his position as a starter after the previous upperclassmen retired, and he does not fully believe in his own ability. This lack of confidence contrasts with his undeniable value to the team, as he is regarded by his peers and coaches as an irreplaceable presence and a "treasure" of Seiseki.
Haibara's primary motivation is to overcome his physical disadvantages through intelligence and hard work. He is a firm believer that a smaller player must use his head to survive in the sport. He diligently studies his own performances on DVD, watching each recording at least three times to find small areas for improvement, which he credits as the method he used to fight for his position. In matches, he puts this tactical mind to use, excelling at runs along the sideline and delivering pinpoint passes through the smallest of gaps. His stamina is exceptional; he holds the record for the best time in the team's long-distance runs and is one of the only players capable of playing a full 120 minutes, including extra time.
In his role within the story, Haibara is a mentor to the younger players, particularly the protagonist Tsukushi Tsukamoto. He is one of the players who shows Tsukushi the path he should take, teaching him the importance of thinking and analyzing the game as a smaller player. Haibara is very considerate of his juniors, often checking in on them from the sidelines when he is substituted, and he hopes they can each find a unique skillset of their own.
Haibara shares key relationships with several teammates. He has a close bond with goalkeeper Susumu Inohara, who considers him the team's treasure and offered him comfort after a tough loss. He also has a vibrant friendship with Hisahito Mizuki, with whom he interacts playfully, once climbing a fence to scold him and celebrating a goal by jumping on him. It is mentioned that he has a non-resembling, handsome twin brother who looks up to him as a reliable figure. Off the field, Haibara enjoys card games like UNO and is sensitive to the smell of deodorant, which he dislikes.
