OVA
Description
Kiichi Ooshiba is a second-year student at Seiseki High School and a regular member of its soccer club, where he plays as a forward wearing jersey number 11. Born in Tokyo on October 10, he is an unusually tall and lean young man, standing 191 centimeters and weighing 83 kilograms, with red hair, blue eyes, and a tanned complexion, and his blood type is O. He claims to have started playing soccer as a baby, which would make his history with the sport longer than that of any other high school player in the series, and he asserts that he has the longest soccer career on the team. His academic performance, however, is extremely poor, and he is known for being slow-witted off the pitch.
Ooshiba is introduced as an egocentric, lazy, and narcissistic person. He views himself as a genius and the ace of the team, constantly seeking the spotlight and dreaming of becoming the hero of a match. His guiding belief is that geniuses do not need to make an effort, and he acts on that idea by refusing to run, to defend, or to push himself. When challenged about his attitude, he insists that scoring goals is the striker's job and refuses to change his behavior, earning him the nickname "sulk prince" among his teammates. Because he avoids running, he has little stamina and is frequently substituted during games, a decision he accepts with bad grace.
In terms of ability, Ooshiba possesses the greatest raw potential on the Seiseki squad. Vice-captain Yuuta Usui remarks that when it comes to latent ability alone, Ooshiba is number one. He has an overwhelming physical build that suits aerial battles, and his ball control and technical footwork are strong. His tactical understanding is also rated highly, and his soccer intelligence is considered surprisingly high given his poor academic record. On one occasion he gave detailed positional instructions to Tsukushi Tsukamoto, a forward who only began playing soccer in high school, showing that despite his idleness he understands the game deeply.
As a supporting character, Ooshiba's role in the story is that of an enigma within the Seiseki team: a player with the natural gifts to be its star who declines to use them consistently. His relationships with teammates are shaped by this contrast. Usui openly acknowledges his potential, while Tsukushi, a hardworking beginner, shares the forward line with him and benefits from his tactical advice. He also plays alongside central figures such as Jin Kazama and Hisahito Mizuki, his presence contributing to a forward line that balances effortless talent against relentless effort. Across the television series and its OVA, his characterization remains centered on the clash between his enormous natural talent and his refusal to apply himself, making him one of the clearest examples of untapped potential within the squad.
In his personal life, Ooshiba likes tomatoes, dislikes cherry tomatoes, and has the unusual special skill of guessing the species of tropical fish. His favorite saying is "hit the jackpot," and he openly wishes he had a girlfriend.
