Description
Kimihito Kurusu is the main male protagonist of the story and an ordinary Japanese young man living in Asaka, Saitama. He resides in his parents' home, which he has largely to himself while they are temporarily working abroad. To support himself and his unconventional household, he holds down a part-time job. His life takes a dramatic turn when, through no fault or request of his own, he is thrust into the world of the Interspecies Cultural Exchange Accord and becomes a host family for a growing number of liminals, or monster girls. He can only watch helplessly as the government coordinator, Ms. Smith, repeatedly remodels his home to accommodate each new arrival.
Kimihito is defined by his extraordinary patience, kindness, and lack of prejudice. The many liminal girls who come to live with him fall in love with him not because of any grand romantic gestures, but simply because he is nice, friendly, and modest, and most importantly, because he treats them as ordinary people rather than exotic or dangerous creatures. He is unfailingly polite and seems to form friendships with liminals with astonishing ease, a talent born from his genuine and open-hearted nature. Despite the constant chaos, accidents, and near-death experiences that come with cohabitating with supernatural beings, he possesses a long-suffering temperament and accepts the impositions of Ms. Smith and the MON squad with good grace. He is remarkably courageous and selfless, repeatedly putting his own body in harm's way to protect his houseguests, whom he considers family, such as shielding Centorea from a sword attack or saving Suu from being absorbed.
While generally mild-mannered, Kimihito demonstrates a surprisingly fierce and assertive side when provoked. He rarely shows anger, but when he does, it is a powerful force, most notably when a racist couple insulted Miia, leading him to physically defend her honor, and when Lala was playing with her food, after which he insisted everyone clean their plates. He also has a deep-seated aversion to wasting food. Beyond his moral character, Kimihito possesses several practical skills. He excels at household chores, particularly cooking, where his meals are so good they cause the girls to gain weight, and sewing, where his skill with a needle and thread proves invaluable. An unusual and unwillingly acquired talent is his expert technique for manually milking Minotaur and Pan liminals, a skill that becomes highly demanded.
His primary role in the story is as the host and emotional anchor for the liminals in his care. His home becomes a hub for interspecies cultural exchange, and his interactions drive the plot. Almost none of the other characters call him by his actual name, instead using affectionate nicknames like Darling, Master, Honey, or Boss, reflecting their deep personal affection for him. His key relationships are with each of his homestay girls. Miia, the first Lamia to arrive, is deeply possessive and constantly refers to him as her Darling, fervently desiring to be his one and only. The harpy Papi is more childlike and views him as a big brother figure as much as a love interest, calling him Boss. Centorea Shianus, a centaur, sees him as her destined master, pledging her loyalty as his knight while also harboring romantic feelings. The slime Suu, like Papi, is seen as a child or little sister, though she loves him dearly after he showed her kindness. Mero the mermaid calls him her Beloved, but her affection is complicated by a desire for a dramatic, tragic romance. Rachnera Arachnera, an Arachne, is more cynical and playful, often calling him Honey and treating him as her toy, yet she is deeply moved by his genuine acceptance of her spider-like features. Finally, Lala the Dullahan initially appears as a grim reaper to warn him of his impending death but ultimately joins the household.
Throughout the series, Kimihito shows subtle development. Initially, he is reluctant to view the girls as anything more than close friends due to the legal restrictions of the Exchange Accord. However, when Ms. Smith informs him of amendments that could allow interspecies marriage, he begins to genuinely consider the possibility of a future with one of them, looking at them as potential partners rather than just guests. His relationship with Rachnera, in particular, highlights his perceptiveness, as he recognizes that she takes special care never to truly harm him, revealing the gentle nature beneath her teasing exterior.
In terms of abilities, aside from his domestic prowess and surprising physical resilience to survive the daily rigors of living with superpowered monster girls, he has a noted skill in hand-milking livestock-type liminals. He is also a competent rider, often seen on Centorea's back. His most notable ability, however, remains his unwavering kindness and his superhuman patience, which allow him to navigate a life that is equal parts sitcom and survival situation.
