Description
Kaoru Mashiko is a first-year high school student at Osafune Girls' Academy. She is fifteen years old and possesses a petite physique with a fair complexion, long pink hair styled into twin ponytails, and light blue eyes. A notable part of her hairstyle resembles a pair of dog ears. Due to her small stature, her school uniform vest tends to flop down off her shoulders. She is almost always seen with her guardian youkai, Nene, perched on top of her head.
Kaoru is characterized by a sluggish and taciturn demeanor, consistently conserving her energy. She uses the masculine pronoun "ore" when referring to herself. While she often appears to be irritated or indifferent toward her friend and partner Ellen Kohagura, she genuinely cares for her and relies on her a great deal. Similarly, her relationship with Nene was not always close; as a child, she was repulsed by the youkai because it was an Aradama. However, after she became lost in a forest, Nene came to find her and bring her home, leading to a lasting friendship between them.
As a member of the Mashiko family, she is the inheritor of the guardian youkai Nene and the massive okatana, Nenekirimaru. The blade of Nenekirimaru alone is two meters long, and its name derives from a legend in which the sword slew a youkai named Nene. Despite her small build, Kaoru possesses immense physical strength, swinging her enormous sword with ease. Her swordsmanship style is Yakumaru Jigen-Ryu, a style that prioritizes attack as the greatest defense. It focuses on a specific "dragonfly" stance and a splitting shout called a "monkey's scream" to deliver a single, lethal blow. Her strikes are slow but overwhelmingly powerful, making her techniques highly effective against Aradama but less suited for tournament-style combat against human opponents.
In the story, Kaoru and Ellen attend the National Swordsmanship Tournament as representatives of Osafune Girls' Academy, where Kaoru is easily defeated by Mai Yanase. She later admits that fighting Aradama is more important to her than participating in tournaments. The pair are secretly members of Mokusa, an organization that opposes the powerful Origami Family. They are initially tasked by their school president to pursue fugitives Kanami Etou and Hiyori Juujou. After ambushing them, Kaoru and Ellen reveal their true intentions, testing the pair to see if they are worthy of joining Mokusa. Following this, they become allies and accompany Kanami and Hiyori.
Kaoru is accompanied by Nene, who often saves her from danger, such as when she nearly fell off a cliff during an attack by the Elite Guard. Seeing Nene injured in this encounter motivates Kaoru to fight more seriously. This leads to her defeating Yomi Satsuki, a member of the Elite Guard, by overcoming swarms of Aradama with the sheer power of her okatana, though she tends to fall asleep after a serious battle. After their escape to the Mokusa base, Kaoru joins the group in training and later participates in a direct attack on the headquarters of the Special Sword Administration Bureau to fight back against Yukari Origami. Over the course of the story, she shows a caring side, such as when she bonds with the socially isolated Sayaka Itomi and helps her learn to relax and have fun.
