Description
Mai Yanase is a thirteen-year-old middle school student attending Minoseki Academy, where she is a Toji, a sword-wielder who fights against supernatural entities known as Aradama. She comes from a wealthy background as the eldest daughter of the head of the Yanase Group, an emerging corporate powerhouse, and serves as the poster girl for the family business. Mai has two younger sisters named Miu and Shiori, as well as a loyal butler named Shibata.
In terms of appearance, Mai has purple hair that is folded up and tied with a pink ribbon, and green eyes. She typically wears the Minoseki Academy uniform, which includes a frilly petticoat under her skirt.
Mai possesses a personality that blends a calm and courageous demeanor with a nurturing, older-sister-like tendency to take care of others. She is a diligent hard worker who confronts hardships without hesitation, yet she can also be somewhat shy and reserved. As a hobby, she enjoys making confectioneries and is particularly proud of the cookies she bakes.
Mai's motivations are deeply rooted in her loyalty to her friends and her sense of responsibility. She is willing to fight for those she loves and what she believes in. Her strong bond with her friend and rival, Kanami Etou, is a central driving force for many of her actions. When Kanami becomes a fugitive after helping Hiyori Juujou, Mai uses her family’s resources to organize a search for them, demonstrating her commitment. Upon finding them confronting an Aradama and hearing their claims about a conspiracy, Mai ultimately chooses to trust Kanami and allows them to escape, a decision that disappoints a school official.
Within the story, Mai is established as a highly skilled swordswoman early on. She is the runner-up in the Minoseki Academy Representative Selection Tournament, losing to her friend Kanami in the finals, but both are chosen to represent their school at the National Swordsmanship Tournament. At the national tournament, she defeats Kaoru Mashiko of Osafune Girls' High School before losing again to Kanami. Following the incident where Hiyori attacks Yukari Origami, Mai is interrogated by Maki Shidou of the Origami Family's Elite Guard but is released after proving she had no knowledge of Kanami's actions. Later, her parents attempt to transfer her out of Minoseki Academy due to the increasing danger, but after seeing her fight and a conversation with another researcher, her father relents. Mai also protects Sayaka Itomi from Yukari's forces, fostering a new friendship where she acts as a supportive older sister figure.
Key relationships define much of Mai's role. Her friendship with Kanami Etou is paramount, marked by mutual respect as rivals and deep trust as allies. She also forms a protective bond with Sayaka Itomi. Her family, including her younger sisters and her parents who worry for her safety, plays a significant role in her personal story.
Throughout the series, Mai shows development in her confidence and leadership. While she occasionally struggles with feelings of inadequacy when comparing her abilities to her peers, her strategic intellect is recognized by her team, and she is entrusted with leadership roles in combat. For instance, she is given small-unit tactical command during intensive training and fulfills that role in major incidents.
As a fighter, Mai practices the Hokushin Ittō-ryū, an efficient and organized style of kenjutsu. She wields an okatana named Magoroku Kanemoto. She is noted for her ability to sustain her Utsushi (a spiritual armor) longer than her classmates and possesses keen observational and analytical skills, such as predicting locations by analyzing environmental sounds. She also possesses rare abilities known as Clear Sight and Transparent Sense. Her combat techniques are precise; she can execute an iaijutsu (quick-draw) strike, though she was once defeated when Kanami intercepted it. One of her known secret techniques is derived from the Hokushin Itto-ryu, called Seiouken, which translates to Sword of the King of Stars. Another key ability is go-no-sen, a martial arts concept where a fighter performs a technique only after the opponent has launched their attack.
