Description
Hiyori Juujou is a third-year middle school student from Nara Prefecture who attends Heijou Institute, one of the five schools that train Toji, the sword-wielding priests who fight supernatural entities known as Aradama. At fourteen years old, she is a formidable swordswoman who wields the okatana Kogarasumaru and practices the Kashima Shinto-Ryu swordsmanship style, which emphasizes speed and precision. Her skill is such that she is considered one of the best among Toji, having dominated early rounds of the National Swordsmanship Tournament to reach the final match.

In appearance, Hiyori has long straight black hair and burgundy eyes with fair skin, typically seen in her school uniform with black tights. Her personality is defined by a serious, stoic, and professional demeanor combined with an exceptionally strong sense of responsibility as a Toji. She possesses an uncompromising will that does not hesitate once a decision has been made, refusing to yield to outside influence and often concealing her true feelings from others. This tendency toward self-reliance and emotional reserve frequently leads to misunderstandings with those around her. Despite her cool exterior, she is well-versed in household chores and cooking, skills she developed while tending to her ailing mother. She holds a particular fondness for mint chocolate ice cream.

Hiyori's motivations are deeply rooted in personal tragedy. Her mother, Kagari Juujou, was a veteran Toji who died during the Great Disaster of Sagami Bay while failing to seal a powerful Aradama. Her father, who was related to the Hiiragi family, was killed in action while serving in the Special Ritual Riot Squad when Hiyori was in elementary school. These losses fueled a strong resentment toward Aradama and toward the Origami family, whom she blamed for her mother's death. She enrolled at Heijou Institute to fulfill the duty her mother could not complete, making it her mission to confront Yukari Origami, the head of the Origami family who, unbeknownst to Hiyori initially, had become possessed by the great Aradama Tagitsuhime.

Throughout the story, Hiyori's role begins with her attempt to assassinate Yukari Origami during the final match of the National Swordsmanship Tournament. When her attack fails, she is forced to flee with the intervention of Kanami Etou, her opponent from Minoseki Academy. Initially reluctant to accept help, Hiyori gradually forms an alliance while in hiding, eventually encountering the anti-Origami group Mokusa. Through Mokusa's leader, Akane Origami, Hiyori learns the truth about the Great Disaster and discovers that her mother Kagari played a pivotal role alongside Kanami's mother, Minato, in ending the catastrophe. This revelation strengthens her resolve, and she formally joins Mokusa alongside her growing group of allies.

Key relationships shape Hiyori's journey significantly. Her bond with Kanami Etou evolves from rivalry to deep mutual reliance, as Kanami's persistent optimism and refusal to abandon her gradually soften Hiyori's solitary nature. The relationship with Yukari Origami is complex, shifting from pure hatred to a nuanced understanding after Hiyori learns that Yukari had offered herself to Tagitsuhime in an attempt to save their mothers from an unreasonable duty. Hiyori also carries the legacy of the Hiiragi family, who are responsible for exorcising Aradama, standing in contrast to the Origami family who suppress them. This heritage grants her the power to fuse with the great Aradama Ichikishimahime, giving her the strength needed to fight Tagitsuhime.

Hiyori undergoes notable development from a fiercely independent girl who refused compromise into someone who recognizes the value of fighting alongside others. During a critical mission, when faced with being overwhelmed by Aradama, she found help arriving from Kanami and their companions. Though she admitted she may have become weaker because of them, she saw the strength found in fighting together as sufficient for her and had no regrets. Her development continues after the battle against Tagitsuhime, when she returns to Nara and contemplates retiring as a Toji, only to resume her duties after learning of a mysterious hooded Toji attacking others.

In terms of notable abilities, Hiyori displays incredible speed and precision in combat, making her one of the most technically skilled Toji. After fusing with the great Aradama Ichikishimahime, she gains the ability of future sight, which shows her predictions of possible futures, though this power brings intense mental suffering as she sees herself cutting down those she cares about. She also possesses the Hiiragi family sealing technique, which she uses in her final confrontation with Tagitsuhime, nearly sacrificing herself in the process before being rescued by Kanami.
