Description
Kanami Etō is a second-year middle school student at Minoseki Academy and serves as the main protagonist of her story. At thirteen years old, she has a youthful appearance characterized by short brown hair and light brown eyes, with a small tuft of hair tied into a short ponytail. Her typical attire consists of her school uniform paired with black thigh-highs and running shoes.
Kanami's personality is defined by her cheerful, positive, and energetic nature, which has helped her form many friendships. She is a genuine enthusiast of kenjutsu to the point where her eyes visibly sparkle whenever the subject of swordsmanship arises. This passion makes her particularly fond of sword matches, as she takes great delight in observing how different opponents devise their tactics. Her love for battle can make her somewhat impulsive, often getting carried away when faced with the prospect of a good fight against a strong adversary. However, this impulsiveness is balanced by a strong sense of morality, a kind-hearted and understanding nature that extends even to her enemies, and a brave, strong-willed, and surprisingly mature demeanor. Beneath her energetic exterior lies a smart, observant, and perceptive individual who can recognize and admit her own mistakes.
Regarding her background, Kanami's mother was a very powerful Toji who has since passed away. She lives with her unnamed father and a younger brother. She enrolled at Minoseki Academy upon entering middle school, where she met and became friends with Mai Yanase sometime before the series begins.
Kanami's central motivation is deeply intertwined with her love for sword fighting and her strong sense of justice. This is most clearly demonstrated during a national swordsmanship tournament, where she is scheduled to face Hiyori Juujou in the final match. When Hiyori suddenly attacks Yukari Origami, the head of the tournament's host family, Kanami chooses to help Hiyori escape rather than letting the match be canceled, driven by her desire to see their fight through. After witnessing what she believes is an Aradama hiding within Yukari's presence, she decides to fully commit to aiding Hiyori in her mission, showing a willingness to shoulder half the burden of Hiyori's heavy resolve. Her role in the story evolves from a tournament participant to a fugitive, and eventually to a key ally of the anti-Origami organization known as Mokusa.
Key relationships greatly influence Kanami's journey. Her closest and most important friendship is with Mai Yanase, her classmate and fellow representative of Minoseki Academy, with whom she shares a deep bond despite being rivals in swordsmanship. Her relationship with Hiyori Juujou is the primary driver of the plot; the two begin as opponents but quickly become partners on the run, with Kanami acting as a steadfast and supportive companion to the more driven Hiyori. Throughout her travels, she also crosses paths and forms connections with other Toji, including the Renpu Girls' School representative Sayaka Itomi and the Osafune Girls' Academy pair Kaoru Mashiko and Ellen Kohagura, some of whom become allies associated with Mokusa.
Throughout the narrative, Kanami demonstrates notable personal development. Her initial, almost naive enthusiasm for sword fighting matures into a deeper understanding of the weight of a swordsman's resolve. When Hiyori tries to leave her for being unwilling to kill, Kanami responds not by accepting the separation but by declaring her own resolve to protect Hiyori's objective, thus growing from a simple battle lover into someone who fights for the sake of another's mission. She continues to grow as a fighter, eventually able to hold her own against and even surpass opponents who initially overwhelmed her, such as the elite guard Suzuka Konohana.
In combat, Kanami is extremely skilled, having become the champion of her academy and advanced to the final of the national tournament. She practices the Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu style, a school of swordsmanship historically taught to shoguns that focuses on reading an opponent's movements and attaining victory, which includes a technique called Bladeless Takedown. Her Okatana is a short, curved blade named Chidori, which leaves a white trail of heat in the air when swung. Her abilities include immense speed that allows her to keep up with faster opponents and perform a high-speed Jin'i technique, as well as incredible stamina that permits her to fight many battles in quick succession. Her greatest assets are her superior instincts, which close the gap between physical strength and speed, and her keen intellect and insight. She can identify a Toji's sword school simply by observing their stance, quickly deduce the strengths and weaknesses of different styles, and analyze an opponent's strategy to create a counter during the heat of battle, even managing to counter a technique that predicts the future. Furthermore, she is highly proficient in maintaining Utsushi, the spiritual armor used by Toji, for a long duration.
