Description
Aki-sensei is an instructor and mentor for the Hero team featured in the Washio Sumi is a Hero story. At the time of that narrative, she is 25 years old. Her full name is never revealed, and she is primarily known by this title, which reflects her role as a teacher to the young protagonists, Washio Sumi, Nogi Sonoko, and Minowa Gin.

In terms of appearance, Aki-sensei is a tall, well-proportioned woman with glasses and green-brown hair, which she typically ties back in a side ponytail, allowing some bangs to hang over her eyes. As a teacher, her attire consists of a green shirt with a dark green bow, a forest green skirt, gray leggings, and black kitten heels.

Her personality is characterized by a strict and stern demeanor towards her students. She has a talent for being intimidating, capable of scaring students into submission. However, this exterior masks a fundamentally kind and helpful nature. She is not disliked by her charges, who seem to understand that her firmness comes from a place of genuine care and a desire to prepare them for the serious responsibilities they hold.

Aki-sensei's role in the story is multifaceted. She serves as the homeroom teacher and combat instructor for the Hero team, training them for their battles against the Vertex. She is fully aware of the Hero system and its implications, making her a key adult figure who bridges the gap between the young fighters and the Taisha, the religious organization that oversees the Heroes. Her duties include not only physical training but also managing the team's dynamics, such as when she surprisingly appoints Sonoko as the team leader over the more obvious candidate, Washio. She is also the one who briefs the girls on updates to the Hero system, such as the introduction of fairies following the death of Gin Minowa.

Her motivations are complex and evolve. Initially, she is dedicated to training the girls to be effective Heroes. When she learns the full, cruel truth about the Hero system and the cost of their powers, she is visibly shocked. Despite this, she adheres to the Taisha's protocols, reporting the information to the families rather than telling the Heroes directly. This decision places her in a difficult position, bound by duty to an organization that demands great sacrifices from children. After Gin dies and Sonoko is enshrined as a half-god following the final battle, Aki-sensei undergoes a significant change. She begins wearing a mask and suppresses her personal emotions, seemingly devoting herself entirely to her duties as a Taisha priestess, a role she assumes after the events of Washio Sumi is a Hero.

Key relationships define her character arc. Her primary connection is with her three students, especially after the traumatic loss of Gin. She is present to pick up the grieving Washio and Sonoko and listens to their sorrow. However, after Washio loses her memories and Sonoko is transformed, Aki-sensei closes herself off emotionally. In later years, she serves as a strict priestess who guides new Heroes, often clashing with those like Kusunoki Mebuki who resent her emotionless and utilitarian approach, which prioritizes the salvation of the majority over the sacrifice of the few. Despite this cold exterior, some former colleagues believe her kind heart remains hidden beneath the mask. Her underlying humanity is ultimately confirmed after the Shinju-sama perishes; while many of her colleagues lose their human form entirely, Aki-sensei manages to retain hers, losing only one eye. In a final, emotional reunion, she apologizes to Tougou Mimori and Sonoko, finally dropping her stoic facade and sobbing, showing she had grieved for Gin and suffered alongside them all along.

Regarding notable abilities, Aki-sensei is not a Hero herself and does not possess their divine combat powers. Her abilities lie in her role as a trainer and military advisor. She is knowledgeable about combat tactics and is responsible for physically conditioning the girls for battle. Her true skill is her resilience and her capacity to function as a loyal agent of the Taisha, even when its orders lead to tragic outcomes. Her most significant act of endurance is her partial transformation at the end of the Hero system; the loss of her eye is the starting point of her change into sacred wheat, a fate she withstands better than most, allowing her to survive into the new world that follows.
