Description
Moriko Morioka is a thirty-year-old single woman who once worked as a successful employee in a corporate sales department, a job she held for over eleven years since graduating from high school. Eventually, the stress and dissatisfaction of this career drove her to a breaking point, leading her to quit and withdraw from her previous life. She adopts the lifestyle of a NEET, choosing to remain largely inside her apartment and dedicating herself fully to online gaming as a form of escapism and a search for a more fulfilling existence. In the MMORPG Fruits de Mer, she creates a male avatar named Hayashi, a handsome and charming knight character that stands in stark contrast to her own insecure and reclusive real-world self.

In terms of personality, Moriko is characterized as an introverted and quiet person. When she does speak in real life, she tends to do so in an excessively polite manner to strangers, but internally her thoughts are energetic, analytical, and often quite humorous. She is deeply self-conscious about her appearance and her status as an unemployed woman in her thirties, and she experiences significant social anxiety when interacting with people outside of her computer. Yet, through her online persona, she discovers a version of herself that is confident, competent, and capable of leading and protecting others. Her motivations are rooted in a desire to escape the pressures and disappointments of adult life, seeking a sense of achievement, belonging, and connection that she felt was missing from her corporate years. She genuinely values the friendships she forms in the game, as they provide her with a community and a sense of purpose that her real life lacks.

As the main protagonist of the story, Moriko’s journey centers on the gradual reconciliation between her virtual and real identities. Her key relationships drive this growth. The most significant is with Yuuta Sakurai, who plays the in-game character Lily, a high-level healer who helps Hayashi when he is a beginner. The two become close friends in the game and later, unaware of each other’s identities, meet in the real world after an accidental collision at a convenience store sends Moriko to the hospital. Their relationship evolves from mutual curiosity and awkwardness into a genuine romantic connection, forcing Moriko to confront her insecurities about being seen and accepted for who she truly is. Another important relationship is with Homare Koiwai, a former colleague from her corporate days who now works alongside Sakurai. Koiwai recognizes Moriko and, having respected her abilities in the past, becomes a supportive friend who gently pushes both her and Sakurai toward honesty and closeness. Within the game, she bonds with the guild @HomeParty, including the leader Kanbe (revealed to be Kazuomi Fujimoto, the convenience store clerk) and other members who accept Hayashi without question and help foster her sense of belonging.

Throughout the narrative, Moriko undergoes meaningful development. She begins as a woman who has entirely retreated from the world, nearly housebound and afraid to let anyone see her real self. Over the course of the series, she takes small but courageous steps, such as getting a haircut, wearing makeup, and finally agreeing to go out in public. She learns to accept support from others and gradually overcomes her shame about being a NEET, allowing herself to embrace both her passion for gaming and her desire for real human connection. Her abilities, while not supernatural, reflect her growth as a person. In the game, she demonstrates strategic decision-making, dexterous gameplay, and a talent for teamwork as a support class. More importantly, she develops empathy, social intelligence, and the confidence to navigate complex interactions both online and in the real world. Her story is one of recovery from burnout and isolation, showing a person learning to value herself again.
