Description
Coach Tanahashi is the former coach of the Tokyo Miyake Girls High School Sidecar Club, where he was responsible for teaching the protagonists Yuri Miyata and Megumi Meguro the fundamentals of sidecar racing. A dedicated and skilled racer himself, his passion for the sport is his defining characteristic, and he respects those who share a similar level of commitment. He appears to be largely oblivious to the romantic affections of others, a trait that is central to his role in the story, as he does not seem to notice that both of his students have developed deep feelings for him.
His primary motivation is his own career as a sidecar racer. After coaching Yuri and Megumi through a racing season, he decides to leave Japan to pursue his dream of competing in the famous Isle of Man TT races in England. This departure is a key event that sets the stage for the series, as the two girls aim to win their own championship in order to follow him abroad. However, his time in England is unsuccessful; he falls into a slump after his racing partner quits, leading him to return to Japan.
His return places him directly back into the lives of his former students, who see it as a new opportunity to win his affection. His role evolves from that of a distant former mentor to a direct source of conflict and motivation. The story reaches a turning point when he announces his engagement to Betty Birchall, a champion sidecar racer he met while competing in the Isle of Man TT. This revelation deeply affects Yuri and Megumi, forcing them to confront their feelings and their goals in racing. In the end, his engagement is broken off, leaving the nature of his future relationships with Yuri and Megumi uncertain.
In terms of abilities, Coach Tanahashi is a highly competent and knowledgeable racer. His expertise is demonstrated by his ability to teach the complex skills required for sidecar racing from the ground up. His technical understanding of the sport is such that during a critical final race, he is able to devise a strategic solution for his injured students, suggesting they switch their roles of driver and passenger to allow them to continue competing.
