Description
Jack Hanma is a major character in the martial arts manga and anime series Baki. He is the son of the "strongest creature on Earth," Yujiro Hanma, and a Canadian operative named Diane Neil. Jack is the older half-brother of the series' protagonist, Baki Hanma. His origins are tied to the Vietnam War, where his mother encountered Yujiro. After being disarmed and outmaneuvered, Diane Neil was assaulted by Yujiro, an act from which Jack was conceived. She later gave birth to him in prison.

Driven from birth by a singular, all-consuming desire, Jack's sole motivation is to defeat his father, Yujiro, and avenge his mother. This goal has shaped every aspect of his existence. He has openly declared that he has abandoned all worldly pleasures, including fine food, drink, women, money, status, and reputation, in exchange for obtaining pure, absolute strength. Jack is characterized by an incredibly determined, stubborn, and relentless personality. He simply does not know how to quit, pushing his body to suicidal extremes through brutal training regimens. This path led his body to deteriorate until a scientist, inspired by witnessing Yujiro's power, provided him with powerful steroids. Jack accepted these drugs without hesitation, fully aware of the lethal side effects, stating that he has long been ready to trade a long life for a body strong enough to defeat his father.

Throughout the story, Jack serves as a formidable rival and dark mirror to his younger brother, Baki. He first appears in the Maximum Tournament arc under the ring name Jack Hammer, concealing his true lineage. He battles his way to the finals, where he faces Baki in a brutal, deeply personal fight that pushes both brothers to their absolute limits. After his narrow defeat, he immediately challenges Yujiro in a parking lot and is soundly beaten. Unwilling to accept his limits, Jack undergoes multiple surgical bone-lengthening procedures to increase his height and reach, eventually becoming a 243-centimeter giant. He continues to seek out the world's strongest opponents. He captures the Russian convict Sikorsky, defeats Muhammad Ali Jr., and later challenges Pickle, a primordial human revived from prehistory. In his fight with Pickle, Jack bites off the caveman's ear but has the lower half of his own face eaten off in return.

Jack's key relationships are defined by the Hanma bloodline and his quest for revenge. His relationship with his brother Baki is complex and evolves over time. Initially rivals who share the same goal of surpassing their father, they develop a mutual respect. After their fight in the tournament, the defeated Jack acknowledges Baki's victory and even lifts his exhausted brother's arm to declare him the champion. While he sees Baki as a rival, deep down he cares for him. His relationship with his father, Yujiro, is one of pure antagonism and a desperate need to prove his worth through violence, a stark contrast to Baki's more nuanced desire for acknowledgment. His mother, Diane Neil, remains a powerful off-screen presence, the source of his vengeful drive.

Jack undergoes a significant evolution both physically and philosophically. After having his teeth shattered in a defeat by Izou Motobe, who argued that pure brute force was insufficient, Jack re-evaluated his approach. He emerged with a new, fully realized fighting style called Goudou, which translates to "the way of biting." He had his teeth replaced with a set of custom-made, unbreakable titanium alloy fangs. This transformation marks his development from a brawler who simply used his teeth as a weapon into a dedicated martial artist who has built an entire combat system around the concept of the bite, accepting his role as the "Biting Cyborg". He becomes more composed and mature, having learned from his defeats.

Jack Hanma's most notable ability is his terrifying biting strength, which forms the core of his Goudou fighting style. His jaw muscles are incredibly powerful, capable of crushing wood, bone, and flesh with ease. After having his teeth replaced with titanium, his bites became virtually unstoppable, capable of severing fingers and tearing through muscle tissue. To complement his biting, Jack relies on overwhelming physical dominance. His body, built through a combination of insane training, steroids, and multiple bone-lengthening surgeries, grants him immense size, strength, and durability. He has demonstrated the power to punch a person through a telephone booth, throw heavy opponents like ragdolls, and withstand stabs from sharp weapons without injury. While his technique is more straightforward than some martial artists, he has shown a keen combat instinct, even figuring out the principle of Aiki on the fly during his fight with the master Gouki Shibukawa.
