Description
Atsushi Suedo is a karate fighter and a minor character from the Baki the Grappler series, where he serves as an early opponent for the protagonist, Baki Hanma. He is a twenty-five-year-old student of the Shinshinkai style of karate, holding the rank of third dan. Physically imposing, Suedo stands 205 centimeters tall and weighs 130 kilograms, possessing a muscular build that contributes to his formidable presence in the ring.
Initially, Suedo is characterized by arrogance and overconfidence, a trait born from his consistent victories in Shinshinkai tournaments. His ego is so inflated that he believes himself to be superior even to his own master, Doppo Orochi, and he harbors ambitions to surpass him. This attitude, however, undergoes a significant transformation following his defeat. After losing to Baki, Suedo becomes far more humble, developing a deep and unwavering respect for Doppo Orochi and a fierce loyalty to his karate school. He is also known to be a nervous and irritable person, easily angered by any comments that question his strength, and his temper can negatively affect his focus during a fight.
In the narrative, Suedo is chronologically the first opponent Baki Hanma faces in the Underground Arena Saga, during the finals of the 18th Annual Shinshinkai Karate Tournament. Despite being the top fighter of his school, Suedo is quickly outclassed by the young Baki. Early in the match, Baki dislocates Suedo’s shoulder with a jump kick. Demonstrating immense pain tolerance and sheer will, Suedo ignores doctors and forcefully pops his own shoulder back into its socket to continue fighting. Desperate to win, he uses a dental template designed to boost his strength by thirty percent, but he discards it after Baki mocks him. Frustrated by his inability to land a legal blow, Suedo breaks the tournament rules by striking Baki in the face, only to fracture the bones in his own hand. The match concludes with Baki knocking him unconscious.
Following this defeat, Suedo transitions from an arrogant rival to a supportive friend and ally of Baki, often cheering for him during subsequent fights. His role evolves to demonstrate his deep loyalty to the Shinshinkai. When Doppo Orochi battles the series' primary antagonist, Yujiro Hanma, Suedo impulsively leaps into the arena to defend his master and proclaim the superiority of his karate style, only to be instantly knocked out by a single punch from Yujiro. His most significant later action comes when his close friend and fellow student, Kiyosumi Katou, is nearly killed by the death row convict Kaioh Dorian. Driven by a brotherly bond and a desire for vengeance, Suedo confronts Dorian at an amusement park. Despite landing some initial blows, his arrogance leads him to underestimate his opponent. The fight moves to a roller coaster, where Suedo uses the Sanchin stance, a technique taught by Doppo to improve balance, to stabilize himself. Nevertheless, Dorian ultimately overpowers and nearly kills him, highlighting both his courage and his limitations.
Suedo's notable abilities are rooted in his tremendous physical strength and resilience. He is capable of bench pressing 270 kilograms and running 100 meters in eleven seconds. His most remarkable feat is his ability to relocate his own dislocated shoulder, a painful act that speaks to his high pain threshold and determination. While a powerful and skilled karateka, his impulsive nature and overconfidence often prove to be his greatest weaknesses against more cunning or overwhelmingly powerful opponents.
