ONA
Description
Gai Ogata is a teenage boy who serves as the central figure of his narrative, a young man defined by a tragic past and a constant struggle against a powerful, violent curse. He is sixteen years old and was born under grim circumstances, as his mother took her own life in a forest shortly after his birth. He was discovered as a newborn and taken in by Amon Ogata, a master swordsmith who would raise him as an adoptive son and apprentice, teaching him the art of forging blades.

In terms of personality, Gai typically presents himself as calm, cold, and unsociable. This withdrawn demeanor is a direct result of his deep-seated resentment towards his mother for abandoning him through death, and the profound emotional scars left by this event. He is constantly troubled by an inner voice of murderous intent, a factor that makes him deeply afraid of losing control and hurting those close to him, particularly Sayaka Ogata, his adoptive father’s daughter. Despite his frightening circumstances, Gai possesses a quiet sensitivity and a deep longing to find a place where he truly belongs, often thinking about a somewhere else beyond his current reality.

Gai’s life changes irrevocably after he loses his right arm in an accident involving the legendary cursed sword known as the Death Dragon, or Shiryu. This is the very same blade that was found with him as an infant and which drove his mother to suicide. Amon forges the demonic sword into a prosthetic limb for Gai, making him what is known as a Chrysalis, a wielder of a cursed weapon who faces the risk of transforming into a mindless armored monster called a Busoma. This new arm, which is the source of his power and his greatest trial, can physically transform, initially taking on a dragon-like, organic appearance before becoming a more stable, sword-like structure as Gai’s mental state evolves.

His primary motivation throughout his journey is to find a way to control the murderous impulses of the Death Dragon and protect those he cares about from his own power. He is later driven by a desire to save Sayaka after she is abducted and to confront the forces manipulating his fate. His central role in the story is that of a vessel for a powerful entity known as the Weapon God, a status that makes him a target for both the monstrous Weaponized Demons and the mysterious Organization known as the Shoshidai, each seeking to use him for their own ends.

Key relationships define his path. His bond with his adoptive father, Amon, is complex and ultimately tragic, as Gai is forced to confront him after he transforms into a Weaponized Demon. His connection to Sayaka, who grew up alongside him, is one of deep, protective affection, though he constantly fears that his dark nature will bring her harm. He also carries a heavy sense of guilt and responsibility for Seiya Ichijo, a fellow wielder of a cursed weapon whose fate is intertwined with his own.

Gai undergoes significant development as his story progresses. Initially overwhelmed by the Death Dragon’s power, he frequently falls into violent rampages and can regress to a childlike state. However, through his interactions with others and his own internal struggle, he learns to confront his own existence and accept his feelings, which grants him greater mastery over his cursed arm. He matures emotionally, becoming more open to communication and able to navigate complex social situations, such as when he is forced to infiltrate a high school for a mission. In the anime adaptation, his arc concludes with him returning to his peaceful life as a swordsmith in the Ogata family, having found a measure of control over the demonic power that once threatened to consume him. It should be noted, however, that some viewers have found his character development to be lacking, describing him as an unchanging and unsympathetic protagonist despite his central role in the events of the series.

Gai’s notable abilities are almost entirely derived from the demonic sword Death Dragon, which forms his right arm. He is a highly skilled swordsman and swordsmith, possessing superhuman strength, agility, and stamina. He can unleash cursed energy slashes in combat and, when he fully transforms into a Weaponized Demon, gains the terrifying ability to enthrall people with madness and amplify their violent impulses. His power is considered immense, as he is able to defeat other powerful Busoma, and he has survived falls from great heights and attacks that would destroy large buildings. The key to his power lies in his mental state; as he overcomes his inner demons, the form of Death Dragon itself changes, becoming a more refined and controllable weapon that reflects his psychological growth.
