Description
Elias Ainsworth is one of the central figures in The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star, appearing as a powerful and enigmatic mage who purchases the young protagonist, Chise Hatori, to be his apprentice and future bride. His origins are deliberately ambiguous, as he is not human but a unique being composed of both fae and human elements, with his exact nature remaining a mystery. He is one of the last true magi in existence, and his immense power has earned him titles such as the Thorn Sorcerer, the Child of Thorn, and Pilum Murialis. Physically, his most distinguishing feature is his head, which takes the form of an animal skull, resembling that of a wolf or a goat, with glowing red lights in the eye sockets that shift with his emotions. His tall, bipedal form is typically dressed in a three-piece suit, and he often wears a red cloth over his head and a bolo tie, a gift from the one who named him.

In terms of personality, Elias is marked by a profound reclusiveness and a deep-seated difficulty relating to humans, largely because he does not naturally experience or comprehend human emotions. He approaches emotions as an intellectual exercise, studying people and adopting the mannerisms of a gentleman as a means to cope, yet he frequently misinterprets social cues and remains emotionally detached. He is generally polite and kind, but can be aloof and unfriendly, especially toward children who often perceive his true nature and are frightened by him. Despite his calm demeanor, Elias displays childlike tendencies, including throwing tantrums, and can be driven into a terrifying rage when Chise’s well-being is threatened. His inexperience with his own feelings leads to morally ambiguous actions, such as holding Chise against her will or considering a sacrifice he knows would cause her pain.

Elias’s role in Those Awaiting a Star is that of Chise’s master and the owner of the mansion where she comes to live. The OVA focuses on the early dynamics of their relationship as he introduces her to the world of magic and they begin to coexist. He is fascinated by humanity and has acquired Chise partly in an attempt to understand human emotions through her, hoping that by staying by her side he might eventually be able to feel as she does. His key relationships define his existence. The most significant is with Chise, who becomes the center of his emotional world; his dependence on her grows to the point where he experiences loneliness and jealousy, though he initially struggles to identify these feelings. He also has a small circle of acquaintances, including the priest Simon Callum and the mage Angelica Varley, who tolerate his eccentricities, as well as the dragon tamer Lindel, who discovered him centuries ago in a snowstorm and took him in as an apprentice.

Elias undergoes significant development through his bond with Chise. He begins with an almost clinical understanding of emotions, viewing her as a tool for his own study. Over time, he becomes deeply attached to her and protective, even if that protection manifests in flawed ways like confinement or endangerment of others. His journey involves learning to recognize his own emotions, such as jealousy, and to see Chise not just as an apprentice or a curiosity, but as a partner. Key moments in his development include rejecting offers of sanctuary in the fairy realm to remain with her and informally exchanging rings with her after a rescue, signaling his commitment.

True to his reputation, Elias possesses formidable magical abilities. He specializes in shadow magic and destructive spells, allowing him to hide in the shadows of others or to produce sharp, powerful thorns. He is a skilled shapeshifter, able to alter his appearance to look like a human or to transform into a more monstrous, bestial true form that grants him immense physical strength. He can also teleport using incantations, remove or alter memories, and is incredibly long-lived, having existed for hundreds of years. The OVA showcases these abilities as he guides Chise through a world where magic, fairies, and ancient traditions are a part of everyday life.
