Tamao resides in Ecruteak City as one of the five Kimono Sisters, a group performing ceremonial dances to preserve cultural traditions. She specializes in Dark-type Pokémon, partnered specifically with Umbreon. Together with her sisters Satsuki, Sumomo, Koume, and Sakura, she reenacts historical Pokémon tales like the story of Lugia and the Brass Tower's destruction. In the animated short "The Show" from *Pokémon Evolutions*, Tamao participated using Jolteon to create lightning effects symbolizing the storm in that narrative.
Her association with Umbreon extends to the wider franchise; in *Pokémon GO*, renaming an Eevee "Tamao" triggers its evolution into Umbreon.
