Description
Larry LaRue is a human character appearing in the 2015 animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. He was once a collector of antiques and curiosities, much like Denny Clay, but later became the host of a reality television show called Scrapmeisters. His background as a former collector gives him an eye for valuable items, but his transition to television host has amplified his opportunistic and unscrupulous nature.
Personality-wise, Larry LaRue is portrayed as a slimy and self-serving individual. He is not above breaking the law to get what he wants, and he will trespass or manipulate others without hesitation if it serves his interests. Greed is a strong driving force for him; he is easily tempted by valuable objects and will go to great lengths to acquire them, even if it means exploiting people’s trust or bending rules. Despite his charm and television personality, he is fundamentally dishonest and willing to use his show as leverage to pressure people into selling him items.
His primary motivation is personal gain, both in terms of collecting rare objects and boosting the ratings of his show. He views his reality program as a tool to further his own agenda, using the threat of negative exposure to coerce people into cooperating. In the episode Collect Em All, Larry arrives at Denny Clay’s scrapyard hoping to feature Denny and his collection on Scrapmeisters. When Denny refuses and ejects him, Larry climbs over the wall to film anyway. He encounters Russell Clay, who is eager for publicity, and interviews him before greedily gathering items to take. He attempts to blackmail Denny into selling the items by threatening to portray the scrapyard unfavorably on his show. Denny outsmarts him by confiscating the memory cards from his camera and allowing him to buy the items instead.
In terms of relationships, Larry interacts primarily with the Clay family. He sees Denny as both a rival (due to their shared history as collectors) and a target for his show. He is dismissive of Russell’s enthusiasm but willing to use him to get footage. The Autobots and their human allies have little direct interaction with him beyond this encounter, as his schemes are human-scale and do not involve the ongoing Decepticon threat. His role in the story is that of a minor antagonist, a foil to Denny’s straightforward and honest character, and an example of human greed and deception.
Larry LaRue does not undergo significant character development during his brief appearance; he remains a one-dimensional opportunist. His notable abilities are limited to his persistent and sneaky nature, his knowledge of collectibles, and his ability to produce and host a television show. He has no special combat or technological skills, relying instead on cunning and manipulation. His appearance serves to highlight the contrast between the heroic, selfless actions of the Autobots and the petty, selfish motivations of some humans.
